I just need to settle a bet. I thought that the "hi-boy" refered to the F-250 that was made in model year 1976 through 1977 1/2. I have looked at the internet and seen the term "hi-boy" attached to trucks from the 1930's to 1979. I am almost positive that the last year model was in 1977 1/2 but what other year was this truck produced?

When looking for a replacement gas tank for my
'77 I found reference to "'78-79 highboy 4WD
with narrow 26" frame". Other than that all the
4WD trucks I've seen were lowboy (trans/xfer
case mated instead of seperate). The only other
possibility is a LWB Stepside.
Don't know if this helps, just thought I'd toss it in.
Good luck with your bet, hope you win!
Halfway thru 1977 the F-250 trucks carried a divorced
or "highboy" trans/xfer setup. I want to say somewhere
after 40000 was when the lowboys kicked in, but I could
be wrong. Ask Mil1on- he might know.
also interesting, is the fact that the term highboy didnt originate with ford. when aftermarket companies started converting trucks from dudge, cheesy and Ford to 4x4's back in the 50's, they had to lift the trucks 2 or 4 inches to accomodate the divorced transfer case setups they configured. These trucks were nicknamed highboys, as they stood higher than their 2wd counterparts. the last of the highboys was the 77 1/2 f250 4x4.
perhaps special order highboys existed until 79.
