EGR trouble/O2?

Green-MAC Ok my gas mileage has been in the tank for a while and before i try the old replace parts at whim method. I do not get a check engine light ever but the power seems to lack a bit, avg. mpg13-14. The O2 sensor I know needs the computer to check it but on the egr valve any surefire test vacum or ??? Also odes the electronic sensor go on these or is it mainly the hardware? I read somewhere in hear about douching the egr system...Any sound advice is welcome thanks..:-X12

Don't know enough about your make and model so this is general...

Some EGRs do have a sensor involved(PFE(Pressure Feedback Emitter); solenoid etc). They do go bad but usually not as often as the valve itself. If you replace the EGR and you still get EGR errors, good bet it is the sensor or some of the piping.

Some EGRs can be cleaned, some even have little windows in them to get at the moving parts. I have not personally cleaned one since often they are cheap enough to just toss. I do plan to experiment with the one on my Chebby. I would probably use brake cleaner or something that is a good carbon cleaner, maybe gun solvent? What you want to do is make sure the little piston rod moves freely. Even after cleaning the valve may still be bad due to a leaky diaphram.

EGRs seem to go bad between 50 and 75K or so. Use some anti sieze on the threads so that next time it is easier to remove.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Be sure to check the pipe that brings exhaust gas from the manifold to the EGR. It will often rust through. It is kind of a crinkly, flexible metal pipe.

Some EGRs use a very thin metal gasket. A replacement is often not included with the new EGR, so don't drop that little bugger when you take the old EGR off.

If you are going to try to clean the old EGR, I would recommend not getting any solvent on any plastic or rubber parts, just incase the solvent might damage them. You might start with WD40 at first to see if it works. It is a good solvent and relatively harmless. Then work your way up to harser solvents if you must. A toothbrush and pipecleaners can be handy.

Good Luck and tell us how it works for you.
