Driver side blend door

I know there is probably a million forums on this but I haven't quite been able to pin point the info I'm looking for. 2 days ago it started. I was adjusting my temperature down from 74° to 70° and the dreaded blend door actuator sound of grinding started, or like the sound a Drexel tool would make real quick and quite. But if I adjusted driver and passenger side separate it only did it on the driver side and only when adjusting down. I had the passenger side one replaced about 2 years ago. Now this one I want to do myself. The passenger side one I believe is the one located behind the air bag. Where is the driver side located? I've heard it's possible to do without ripping out the dash? I've also heard there are 3 blend door actuators? How can I check them to verify that I'm replacing the correct one. Also after 2 days of this grinding it has now stopped making noise and has now also stopped allowing me to adjust temperature on the driver side. It appears to be stuck at its temp. If I adjust up to 90° on just driver side it does nothing if I adjust in dual mode the passenger goes to 90° but driver stays put. Including if I put on defrost, vent or floor or any combo of those. I know it's the blend door actuator, but I just need to know its location and how to verify that I'm working on the right one. Can I use a scanner at orielly and read a code??

That actuator is located right in the middle of the dash above the trans hump. I did mine last year...not to bad to do yourself. Get a couple wooden wedges.....carefully insert them between blend door housing and air duct...you'll see what I mean when you look under the dash. Once enough space is created from wedges so you can fit your fingers and a wrench in there...undo 3 screws holding actuator in place....and replace.

yes...drivers side is above trans hump...passenger side is behind glove box...and blend door that controls defrost, floor, vent positions is to the left of the stereo/eatc controls on the drivers side.

easy hmmm lol...depends how well you can contort and stuff yourself into the passenger floor area and work with your hands/fingers in a confined space lol. All in all took me about 30 mins give or take....don't forget to stretch first lol.

Once you get new blend door in....if you perform the self test you used to retrieve the codes....the blend doors automatically re calibrate themselves after the test is finished.

Just wanted to update, I installed the new blend door and it works to perfection! For ford to charge 700 bucks is highway robbery. I had the old out and new in in 30 minutes. If you take the front screw out and loosen the back on just a hair you can twist the actuator and break off the back tab and then remove the screw once the old actuator is out.
