Transmission Shudder

I have a 2002 F-250 4X4 PSD 40K miles. When taking off the transmission is shuddering slightly under loads or if I am on a steep incline when I takeoff. I have thought about the limited-slip rear end but I thnk it may be transmission starting to have problems. I have read about problems with the transfer case in here also. Is the transmission still under the 100K drive train warranty?
Does anyone have any ideas?

Scary stuff. I don't think the 100k warranty covers the transmission.

I don't think it does either but hopefully you don't have a transmission problem. Does your truck have a two piece driveline? If so the rubber bushing that the carrier bearing rides in will wear out and the driveline will wobble around under acceleration. The harder you accelerate the worse it will be. It will also be worse the shorter and taller your truck is (due to the higher angle). Is the truck lifted at all?

One way I can think of to diagnose this is to powerbrake it and see if you feel the shuddering when it's not moving. The problem I'm describing will only happen when the driveline is turning. If you feel it when you're stopped then it could be the TC or a trannie problem. If you feel it when you start to move then it could still be either but mine's cheaper to fix. I'd try that first.

Thanks so much, i will check that today. I had read about something like that in here before, now I am going to go back and read in more detail to find out exactly the symtoms and the fixes.
Thanks again.

By the way I called the Ford place and the 100K warranty only covers the internal components of the motor.

I checked my truck today and my truck is a 4X4 and does not have the carrier bearing. But right behind the transfer case there is a what appears to be a slip joint made into the drive shaft. I looks simmilar to the pictures from Deiselman's website but no carrier bearing. It does have the rubber boot held on with metal straps. Could this still be the problem area?

Most likely not. It was the carrier bearing specifically that I was referring to. I drive an explorer at work every day and it does similar things and has for tens of thousands of miles. I believe it's got an LS rear and that's the cause but I've suspected that the trannie might have issues too. Mine is noticeable when turning which sounds more like rear diff stuff to me than trannie.

Does your truck do this going dead straight?

Actually I only notice it in turns (I think). That was partly what I thought about first. And I have read in here that some techs suggest a friction modifier for the rear-end. Would anyone happen to know what kind and how do you put it in the rear-end?
RRMike thanks for the help. I at least have gotten further down the isolation path.

You just go to the dealer and tell them you need firction modifier for your stock LS. That is if you have a stock LS.

You should go out and do some testing to see if it's only a cornering problem or if you can get it to do it when going straight. That would put your mind at ease or send you to the dealer. One of the two. Like I said though my exploder has done it for probably 60 or 70k miles and I just ignore it because I don't care because it's a company rig. My point being that it hasn't hurt anything.
