Hello, and great to find this forum.
I am an expat working in South Korea and on the look out for a F150 supercrew. Not too much choice here in Korea and very expensive. For a 2012-2013 with > 50000 miles you pay on average > 45000 USD, if you can find one!
I am looking for a 2012-2013 supercrew either a 5.0 or ecoboost. Will use the truck for carrying my ATV and son's dirtbike.
About 20 F150's are available here but major problem I encounter is that most of them have no maintenance history available... They all "look" nice but I want to find out the maintenance history before putting 45000 USD on the table.
Can you please advice me if there is a way to find out some history based on the VIN number, or any other means. I did read about the OASIS report and or CARFAX but there is no real Ford dealer network here, which I can approach.
Other than the outlandish price, its really no different than buying any used vehicle.
I got a carfax on my expedition (thanks tom!) and other than a heating/ac repair and a couple tire rotations there really wasn't much on there for maintenance.
Bout all you can do is look at the vehicle as a whole and see of the little things tell you about the owner.
Were these trucks originally sold in South Korea or are they imported as used vehicles? I don't know much about South Korea but my dad worked for an Indonesian Caterpillar dealer that serviced a mining community in New Guinea and they beat the living **** out of their trucks. I would look over the truck with a fine tooth comb before buying.
Since they are so valuable there, any chance you could import your own from the US-of-A or Canada? Might even make money when it comes time to sell it. Be a hassle, but it's done all the time.
without carfax or OASIS, Id say you are out of luck
Thanks, think you are right. The past days I have been looking at VIN number history via Carfax and Verify. Found a few cars which were advertised as accident free in Korea but the history showed a salvage title, total loss...
Had a dealer today who was not willing to give me a VIN number on the phone, and no maintenance history available. Wonder which idiot is throwing 40 000 USD out of his pocket for a car with unknown history, nor a clean Carfax report. Not me.
My primary concern would be parts availability. repairs and body work if needed. Without a Ford network that's going to hinder you in the future.
Thanks for the concerns. Parts I am not too worried as I can order on line. There is a Ford dealer but 500 km from here. I can do a lot myself but you are right, not practical if something serious need to be repaired.

You are absolutely right. But I am not interested to buy a total loss for a lot of money while they are advertised as accident free. I am not interested to buy a car with a salvage title anyway.
All F150's for sale are about 500 km from where I live. I will do my homework to filter only clean Carfax cars out and take it from there.

So far what I can see; all these trucks are being imported from the US or Canada.
South Korea is a great country but the people only fix it when it breaks... Most people drive newer cars and bin them after 4 years before there is something to fix... A very small second hand market here and especially Ford F150 and Ram 1500's you will only find 20 over the whole country. This might say something about the price as it is question and demand I guess.

Importing cars is very complicated here in Korea. The importing not as such but the registration. I have been importing cars in Europe, which was easy but here it is a different ball game I am afraid.
Yeah, the paperwork can be tough. I know there is a thriving market for Japanese cars in both Canada and the USA, and that paperwork is well understood. So the transport itself can't be that hard, but the regulations, I can't help with that.
I'll bet if you can figure out how, you could make money on it. maybe import two or three, choose your favourite when they arrive, and sell the rest to pay for it all? New business if you have the time on your hands maybe?
