I've got a 91 with a 7.3 that the antifreeze in the radiator is like black syrup. Checking the oil doesn't show any tell-tale signs of antifreeze(yet), but there is definitely oil in the antifreeze. Could this be cavitation? Haven't had it very long and this showed up yesterday. Any ideas?
had a 6.9 with the same problem.Pulled the engine and disassembled to find that it had a crack in the block between the oil passage and the cooling system. The reason it only leaks one way is that the crack only opened up when it was running and the oil pressure was greater than the cooling system pressure.Block was junk.
Fun a compression check and lead down test, This will tell you if the problem lies in the cylinder or else where. Most of the time when oil is seen in the rad, then first stop is the oil cooler but let's keep our fingers crossed that it's the culprit.
Speaking of Oil coolers, does anyone know where you can buy the ends of the oil cooler, known as headers?
I am having no luck finding them, I have a MAY 1984 6.9L diesel in a 1984 E-350 Van(motorhome) engine ser # 115666.
I have been to junkyards, and they have them for pickup trucks, but the oil cooler headers are different on the van, and I can't find them! Ford has discontinued them!
Mine are corroded and leaking, I may have to have them welded, does anyone know if they are aluminum, or some kind of pot-metal? They are not magnetic.
