I've got a 2006 f250 super duty with the amazing (5.4L 3v) engine. Not so amazing. It's the most gutless truck I have owned. Moving on, she just hit 121k, recently she's been very hesitant when going uphill with a load, she evens out when I give it more acceleration. I've asked around and have been told doing a tune up on these engines are a complete nightmare. Should I replace the fuel filter and clean the MAF sensor before I attempt even touching the spark plugs? This all started around 120,300 miles seems to be getting worse as days go on.
How many miles are on the plugs? That's what is going to determine how much of a "nightmare" you are going to have. Ford put out a bulletin on the prep for changing the plugs to "help" prevent breakage. Basically, guys around here have had good luck with blowing the plug holes clean, warming the engine a little bit, spraying Kroil or other penetrant into each hole and coming back the next day. Seriously. Let that stuff do what it is designed for and leave it alone. You can do the MAF and fuel filter for giggles if it makes you feel better. If the plugs are long overdue you might still break one ..or all of them off. The stories are from none, and they came out like butter, to the truck is now in the shop with the guys who have the extractor tool. Ford also issued a "recall/reimbursement" order for people who paid over some crazy figure (300 or 400 bucks I think,,could be wrong) to have a shop fix the plugs. Penetrant is your friend!
I changed my at 110,000 after running Techron for a month. Still 4 of the 8 broke off but with the tool made for this, the other 4 all came out with no problems. Replace the rubber boot when you put new plugs in. Truck runs great but you will only get so much with the 5.4l and 3.73 gears. Best thing to do is to regear it after a tune up especially if you have larger tires.
