74 power steering

So it looks like I have 2 leaks. PO told me it leaked but I topped it off and made it 1500miles home and 2months before I heard some squealing. I believe this crappy homemade seal might be one of the culprits and the other leaking is along the front bar probably an o-ring. Didn't know if there were any known issues I should address or if there are notorious leaking spots. Anyway I here are the pics of the box. I can get more if it'll help. I appreciate any help!

Is that a crack in the housing? Doesn't look right from my point of view.

Never mind, I see it better now.

Yeah the red(orange?) blob is what I assume is a homemade seal. It's where those to pieces meet together, in the one pic you can see the screw posts. I've only ever changed my power steering fluid so I'm not too educated on this subject, or the parts

Probably best to get it removed and up on a bench for some tlc.

Hopefully someone with some experience with one of those steering boxes will chime in for you.

Yeah, might YouTube some videos to make sure I take it off right. I'll be replacing that seal for sure and hopefully that's the only problem there. And then I have no clue on the front bar lol. Hopefully someone will come along soon!

It might be simple once you dive into it. Keep us posted and take pictures for referencing later.

This is not a steering gear box, it's the Garrison Power Assist Power Steering Control Valve (shown as 3A730 in upper parts catalog pic).

The steering gear box used with 1973/75 F100 4WD & 1975 F150 4WD is the manual type, because it has nothing to do with Power Assist.

Lower parts catalog pic shows an exploded view of the Garrison Power Assist Control Valve.

Thanks for the info, btw does that change for an F250? Forgot to mention it's a 74 F250

Two types of Power Assist P/S used in 1974 F250 4WD

The serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN

Garrison Power Assist P/S: 1973 F250 4WD, 1974 F250 4WD before serial number T80,001.

Bendix Power Assist P/S: 1974 F250 4WD from serial number T80,001, 1975/77 F250 4WD (High Boys).

Awesome, mine is U11214 i assume it still has the factory one cz it looks that old lol. Is one better than the other? I've seen a lot of threads lately on garrison but haven't heard of the Bendix before

Pardon my ignorance on this, but I can't for the life of me get this power assist pump off. I disconnected the 4lines coming in and let the PS fluid drain. Then do I just unbolt the 4 screws on the side closest to the brake drums? Because I can't get them to budge nor can I get a grip on them. Anyone have any videos or how-to's for removing it?

This is not a P/S pump, it's the power steering control valve. 1974 from serial number T80,001 is the Bendix type. See pic:

Sorry, there are a lot of terms related to this system that I seem to be messing up lol. I'm learning I promise! I'm also pretty sure it's Bendix

Do you have any tips to get it off?
