Hey guys, just wanted to start off by saying thank you for all the help! I finally finished the truck and got it to pass inspection this week! It still has a few minor things, but we'll knock out this one! The transmission is leaking around the drive shaft, so my question is essentially how do I stop this??? What would make it do that and how does it seal and keep in the transmission oil from leaking out around it? It's a 2wd truck with a 302 for those that are new! Thanks everyone!
If we knew the year that might would give an idea, but reguardless if its leaking around the tail shaft at the drive shaft sounds like you need to replace the tailshaft seal.
Question is though are you sure its the tail shaft leaking and its not just simply blow back from a leak happening further forward in the truck?
Actually, the type of output shaft is as important as the type of transmission. There are two types:
Slip yoke: In this one the driveshaft has a piece that slides into the transmission and couples to the output shaft via the internal splines on the driveshaft and external splines on the transmission's output shaft. And there's a seal driven into the end of the transmission that rides on the outside of the driveshaft. You can easily pull the driveshaft and replace the output seal.
Fixed yoke: This one has u-joints on the driveshaft that are held to a flange on the transmission's output shaft by u-bolts. The seal is also driven into the end of the transmission, but you have to remove the driveshaft and then remove the output flange from the transmission to get to it.
Wow sorry about that guys! It's a toploader with a slip yoke! I got so tied up in the other stuff I forgot all about that! The year of the transmission is unknown, it's definitely not original and the tag is in rough shape on the trans
Hmmm
I was under the impression that Bronco's and 150's came with fixed yokes and slip shafts.
That 250/350 trucks had slip yokes behind NP435's or BW T-18/19's.
Being a 302 you might have a RUG/SROD?
But you say the gearbox has been swapped so it is really hard to pin down.
Parts are easy enough to come by. You need to check the tailshaft bushing for wear before simply replacing the seal.
Jim - My web page on rear drive shafts shows the Type 5 to be the one with a slip-yoke into the tranny. And, my page on 2wd F150 rear shafts shows all of them to be Type 5's. Is that what you meant?
