brother, I was told my hpop is bad. I was sitting on an $880 dollar part. I had help with the install yesterday so I did it. Just trying to learn about my truck here, believing a guy can never get too much advice; been told by a couple posters that injector o-rings are likely the problem, hoping a couple more folks would chime in to give me consensus so I can order the orings and get them in next week. Just trying to learn. Just trying to get my truck running.

Just ordered an o-ring kit from RiffRaff. I believe the new o-rings will solve external o-ring failure only. I was unaware that a truck can have internal o-ring failure as well. Is there a good test to determine whether it's internal or external o-ring failure? I assume with internal o-ring failure it's time for new injectors.

The O-Ring failure these guys are talking about is internal. The injectors are not necessarily bad because the orings are bad.

Thanks for that. Can you tell me the next step in replacing internal o-rings? I got that kit believing that the procedure was to: take off valve cover and remove injectors then take the set of 6 old o-rings off the outside of each injector and put the new Alliant o-rings on, put the injectors back in and see what happens. Sounds like an internal o-ring problem means sending the injectors off somewhere.

No, the internal part of the injector are hard parts no rubber and only reputable rebuilders should touch them, but the injector O rings can be replace by you, with our guidance easy piecy.

Yes sir, the hpop wasn't as difficult as I thought; felt good to get it in there without having to use a mechanic, especially the one who told me that my pump was bad.

The external o-rings from RiffRaff shipped out today for half the cost of my local Ford house and I plan to put them in next week.

It's amazing to me that in less than 40 minutes 5-6 quarts of oil could have leaked into the fuel and caused my truck to run like it did because of something as simple as faulty external injector o-rings.

At 2-3000 psi the oil will fill the fuel tank pretty fast if you keep topping it off.
I am not meaning to be mean just honest . And 880$. Pump ?!?!?! Holey god..and adrenaline is only 700 and a t500 is under 600$..
Good job on getting it swapped out!!
Once you have the injectors out and orings swapped slather the new stix with assembly lube and engine oil and whap them with a rubber mallet. Pull all glow plugs and crank over by hand with valve cover on then with the starter. Make sure to clear the cylinders well. Then make fire!!
Injector hold downs torque to 120 INCH POUNDS!! Not foot pounds lol

One of our work trucks, went thru 2.5 gallons of oil every 120 miles before replacing them, one, yes, one O ring on one injector caused all the oil cunsumption.

I had to bite the bullet in buying the pump from the Ford-house; it did come with an IPR, but still, that was more than I wanted to spend but just couldn't wait around any longer and wanted to get something done.

That's a lot of oil lost on just one o-ring. I hope for 60 bucks the sets of o-rings from RiffRaff will get me going again; that would be a pretty cheap fix if it solves my oil consumption issues and I can do all the labor myself.

Thanks for the replies

I meant internal as in internal in the heads, not the injectors themselves. These guys are steering you right.

Who told you the HPOP was bad, and how did they test it to determine it was bad?

A reputed 7.3 mechanic in the area diagnosed the bad hpop. Being new to diesels and the 7.3 I called numerous shops in the area and very few wanted to work on 7.3s. Most referred me to the mechanic referenced in previous posts as being knowledgeable and honest; he has a 96 full-ton himself. I took his word that the pump was bad. I'm working toward doing everything myself and from what I've been told from posters regarding this latest problem, my issue with oil in the fuel bowl is because of bad o-rings, so I ordered 8 sets from RiffRaff for about $60 and they came today. I am going to attempt to replace the o-rings on all 8 injectors myself next week and see if this gets me back on the road; I hope it does.

I think the o-rings are gonna be the ticket. Hope that gets you back up and running.
