True. But its never a good idea to put more money into something for whats its worth, specially a depreciating asset like a truck. If you get a 6.0 for 15 you now spent 20, and will never get that back. the 6.4 was not bad either a lot of speculation on that and not a whole of truth. worst case the 6.4 is better than the 6.0.
To each his own, but its like putting a $200 part on a microwave that's worth $50.
I think finding a 10 year old truck with less than 100k would be a needle in a haystack.
Ive seen 6.7s with 120-140k go for 22-24. To me that's 20k better spent than something with the same mileage that's twice the age and oh by the way your going to dump 5k into. Something that is 10 years plus in age, bullet proof or no bullet proof, you have more issues with rust on the body, components inside the cab going bad, and just a truck in general that is worn out more.
Its just me but if your willing to spend 20k-25k, I wouldn't be doing it on something of that age.
If I could find a 12 or 13 6.7 for under $25k with under 150k for miles, I'd be in that.
Or, anything with a 6.2 gas. I would do that in lieu of a diesel.
I personally LOVE big gasser motors. I have a 2000 GMC w/ 8.0L V8, an F250 w/ 2 valve V10 & my bucket truck has the 429i V8. Poor fuel mileage in ALL of them, but great reliability, much more affordable parts & service/tech work (when compared to diesel). I do have an awesome mechanic for Powerstroke work locally but he does not go deep into motor rebuilds. I have no one that is a Cummins or Duramax expert (besides dealer wanting $1500 / tech hr). I missed out on a gorgeous V10 in Tampa, FL w/ 103K miles - crew cab 8' bed dually w/ the works & everything functioned, $8900. got picky lol now I'm combing through diesels & trying to wade through the heaps of BULL people pile on the sale spiel hahaha.
On that note, I should have asked this in the original post - ANYONE on here KNOW a great Powerstroke or diesel mechanic in CENTRAL FL I could contact? We have a diesel specialty shop in Bartow, FL called MidFl Diesel that is a JOKE & ripped me off with my 98 Cummins. Unless you're doing a $60K dump truck rebuild, they don't give a flip about you.
On a side note nards444 I agree 100% about the other factors of an aging truck you mentioned - rust, components, electronics, etc. There are so many micro-electronic pieces or hardware in vehicles nowadays, anything over 10 years old is just waiting to fail. That of course is part of buying a used vehicle & not something NEW with warranty, hence the BIG price & BIG payment but it is still a focus of mine when dealing with these laughable sellers: "Well sonny my 1997 F350 4x4 only has 342K miles & runs like the day it was made, you wont have to worry about this truck cuz grandpa blessed it!"
People are a trip. Even trucks under 200K (which are my fancy sadly enough! lol) are like a jar of nuts & bolts shaking down the road. I just hope they stay in place long enough to function & allow me to get some work done hahaha

You should ask for a recommendation in the Florida Chapter forum.
I have a 05 f250 with all the bullet proofing done and I run a hypertech max energy programmer. I've noticed a small little drop of coolant around my degas bottle cap. I wiped it off and checked it constantly for next few weeks. Well I got on the throttle pretty good the other day and checked it and I seen another drop of coolant so it seems it only does it when it gets stomp for sometime. I've had the head gaskets check out and everything seems to be in order. Could this possibly mean I need an after market degas bottle cap? What are some possible reasons for this?
Mobile Oval just south of SR50 on Goldenrod is an ex-Ford dealer diesel mechanic. Myron is the owner and I have used him for both my Excursion and wife's explorer. He installed my BPD external oil cooler setup, and he's a great guy too!
How to verify Bullet Proofing? Easy. Ask for the receipts/pics. My receipt from BulletProof Diesel (Mesa, AZ) was $4500. I doubt I will ever throw throw that receipt away. Nor will I throw away the the receipt or the pics of the $1250 o-ringed head rebuilds. Almost pretty enough to frame and hang on the wall.
FWIW, the quality of the BPD product is amazing. First cabin all the way. Except for BPD manufactured products, the ARP studs, and the remote spin-on oil filter (WIX) all parts were Motorcraft. Not cheap but a lot of value was added by the help given to me about which products to buy. Great recommendations, no sales pressure, crazy knowledge of the 6.0 engine, same day shipping..... A great company to work with.
