Unhappy I'm stumped...

I bought a 88 Ranger 4x4 with a 2.9, When started up oil pressure reads 50 lbs. After the motor runs a couple of min. pressure drops to almost 0. I put a mech. gauge on to bypass the gauge in dash. I tried motor flush, didn't help. I took the left side valve cover off to see if the oil galleys are plugged, but I don't see any galleys! I can see the rockers and springs, but where does the oil for the valve-train come from? Can I start the motor for a couple of seconds with the valve cover off to watch for oil flow?
I'm thinking the oil pump has too much sludge in it. The screen is getting packed with sludge, and dropping the pressure.
Any and all help appreciated

Try going to bobistheoilguy.com and see if they have any ideas or products that may work to flush out your engine. There is one called AutoRx that I have used with some success.

Good Luck

I'm stumped...

I could be the pump screen or bad cam bearings. The oil comes out under the rocker arms and the 2.9s are known for poor upper oiling so I bet you won't have a problem starting it. There are modifications you can make to the valve train.
