I'm trying to figure out what year 351w I have, I pulled the valve covers off the engine to clean them up and paint them, when I pulled them off, I found the adjustable rocker arms, and or studs with nuts instead of the usual newer style of bolts through hte rocker arms, I don't want to take the intake off to find out exactly what year and or casting number they have on them so I was wondering if someone could give me a round about year for this engine?
p.s oh yeah and a way to adjust them, I found one rocker really loose, not too sure if it's worn or just loose, or, possible this looks like a rebuilt? so someone could have possibly put the older heads on a newer block? would those adjustable rockers work with the newer hydraulic lifters?
the engine has been rebuilt, the block is a D9TE, but the heads, I can't get at the casting numbers on them yet, I don't want to take the intake off and or the heads to get at them, but I did find out that they are a positive locking type rocker stud, so I'm guessing 70-75ish for the heads, now are those a good head, or are they garbage? power and flow wise?
The 69 and 70 heads are the best stockers for the 351w. After 74 (i think) the chambers are enlarged. I know that the deck height was raised around 75 on the block to lower compression.
look for the C9 and D0 casting numbers on the block and heads. I think that the numbers are unber the valve covers some where.
I made a mistake in my last post. The deck height was raised from 9.480 in 69-70 to 9.503 in 71. Sorry for misinformation. I got to thinking about it and decided to recheck my information.
D9TE the first letter is the decade "D" 70-79 and the second number is the year "9" so you have a 79 block "T" stands for truck "E" stands for engineering group. Get a head number and I will see what I come up with. Later
I knew that it was a 79 Block, from a truck, but the heads right now, I can't get a casting # off of them yet, I don't have money for intake and head gaskets
The link above has some good information on it. Two things stand out at me as showing the difference of the heads you may have. Earlier heads had 16 intake mainifold bolts and the L-shaped water jacket. That might help you narrow down which heads you have. Of course as you know the olny way to tell is to pull the intake to look at the actual numbers. But, read the link above and it will have information to help you get close.
