Another Dual Tank Question

I have a 1988 F-150 Lariet with the 351 and C-6. It is equipped with dual tanks and a while back I switched from the front tank to the back tank and the gas gauge stayed full for what seems forever. I refilled the front tank and the rear gauge would not come down no matter how far I drove. I went to fill up the rear tank and it was to my surprise still full. Seems the switch was flipped to the rear tank but fuel was still coming from the front tank-no matter which switch was used-Front or rear. Now the front tank is the only one which fuel is drawn from in either position of the fuel switch. Is there a switching unit on the 88's that could be the culprit?

With the motor idleing, I can hear the rear pump turn on when the switch is placed in the rear position but the front pump continues to run! Any help would be great....

Another Dual Tank Question

There is a recall for this problem I think, I don’t have dual tanks, but other people have talked about it.
I think it was called "fuel tank cross flow" there are many people on this site that had this problem. Maybe they can explain it better than I can.

Another Dual Tank Question

Much to my surprise I received a recall notice on my '93 last summer that dealt with this problem. I am not sure what all was done under the recall, since I wasn't having any problems beforehand. They did ask if I was experiencing any problems with the tanks, because if I was then they had to order in different parts. I don't know how far back the recall goes, but it might worth checking into. Ford even went so far as to replace the rear tank (at no cost to me) because it was leaking and they said they could not complete the recall work unless the tank was changed.

Good Luck

Another Dual Tank Question

Ford did have a recall on the fuel tank changeover valve that I think did apply to the 88's also. I had the recall on my 89 F250 4X4 351 EFI dual tanks. The recall was due to a problem that at higher elevations "mountain driving" the fuel would siphon from one tank into the other tank. I never took my truck in for the recall because I live in west Michigan and wasn't to concerned about it.
You might want to run your vin past your local dealer and see if you can get on replaced for free.

Good Luck, Cyberbyrd

Another Dual Tank Question

With all the problems of the dual tank set up, switch, pumps, crossover valves, ect. couldn't a simple hose connecting the two tanks together be fabricated and do away with all these problems?
Anyone ever try this? If I start having problems I may try it.
