I'm pretty sure this has been asked far too many times, but I found a cheap 351w and trans on cl. And was wanting to Build it and swap into my 89 f150..
Should I run into any problems of any kind?
Opinions, pros/cons?
Appreciate any input given
Is the truck currently, 2 or 4wd?
What transmission came with the 351w? Is it intended for a 2 or 4wd?
What engine and transmission is currently in your truck? Is the engine still efi?
Is the 351w currently carb or efi, flat tappet or roller block?
Define "gonna build the 351w".
Will it remain speeds density, be converted to mass air, or will you be going carbd?
Sorry about that, was in a rush
1989 f150 efi 5.0 302 2wd
The 351 is with a transmission (didn't get an exact trans, it is believed to be a e4oD) that came out of a 1997 f250
The truck will remain 2wd only because I can only wish to make it 4wd
Rebuild as in just a general tune up, clean it up, etc
I would like to convert it to maf if it isn't already and eventually upgrade it with a nice cam.
You are likely correct, trans with the 351 is probably an E4OD. Don't use it. No electronic controls in your 89 to operate it. Use the AOD you already have, make sure you get the correct flexplate, use the wiring from the 302.
That 97 engine is a roller cam engine, very desirable and may have been MAF or SD. Won't matter for this swap. You may wish to change to MAF and there are threads on that, but it would not be essential to making this work.
If you still have access to the f250, grab the Maf sensor, computer, wiring and everything else.
If you don't have access, then your faced with a couple things. Your gonna need a 5.8 SD computer, your 5.0 computer with not run the 5.8 correctly, lean. Or, now's the time to dive head first into the mass air conversion. Last person mentioned the transmission dilema.
Your existing Y pipe will need modified slightly, as the 5.8 is taller and wider than the 5.0.
The flywheel is specific to the respected engine, they don't interchange, post 19815.0 are 50 oz imbalance, all 5.8 are 28 oz.
Haven't got a chance to go check it out
But going tomorrow morning to see what all is possible.
If I do pull the trigger on the 351, I will be doing headers and exhaust along with the tune up.
But that'll have to wait.
Will keep everyone updated
