Continuing my saga of ignition issues. My distributor seems fairly healthy, but there is a little bit of lateral wiggle in the shaft. It is enough to make the point gap change when the point wiper is on the cam of the shaft. It would say it moves it 5 thou or so. Is this enough to be giving me some issues? Thanks!

It's not ideal, but may not cause serious problems either. I don't have the 1973 shop manual. The ones for 1976 & 1977 don't seem to address lateral movement. They say end play should be 0.022"-0.032" on the 360. If you set the points with a feeler, you could check it with a dwell meter to see if your getting what you want and see if any variation is detectable. Some distributors have a method of lubricating the upper bushing area. If yours has something be sure it gets some lube. The presence of the lubricant will help with any lateral motion.
Not sure if it interests you, but we swapped in an HEI dizzy on the 77' and 73' (300 & 360) within the last two weeks. Simple 20 minute job, both engines run smoother and you get rid of the coil, ignition box and some ugly wiring too.
Thanks for the input. I picked up a reman dizzy today and installed it. It ran good until I started getting bad top end noise and rough running. Something is REALLY wrong now...
Upon further inspection, oil pump shaft is in the oil pan. Retrieval mission starts soon. Good thing I didn't run it more than a minute or two and only at idle!
