Starter solenoid positive ground

Purchased a 6 volt solenoid and put it in thinking I had it wired correctly. It won't start but if I short the peg starter button is to where the power line is connected it starts right up. Could I have the large cables connected to the wrong poles?

Is this on the Stude? On a Ford, it doesn't matter which side you connect the big cables. It sounds like your solenoid is looking for power to the small terminal to energize. Is that what your starter button does? or is it grounding the connection?

Hi Ross it is on the vehicle I get my parts for the Ford truck. The old system had 'BAT' on one large pole and the new solenoid does not have anything marked. In the pic below the battery hooked to the left side the starter button to the center and ground to right side. I did the new one the same way I think. Will I hurt anything if I reverse it ?

It shouldn't matter, but I'm thoroughly confused what vehicle this is? What do you mean, Ford truck that you get your parts?

All Studebakers thru 1955 are 6V, positive ground.

I didn't think I could ask non Ford truck questions so I say "the vehicle I get my Ford truck parts with! ". Just don't want to get anyone upset by asking a Studebaker question. If I post on the Studebaker forum I'm lucky if three people see it and one responds. The FTE forum has lots of people that are knowledgeable and will share. It is a positive ground system but I don't know if the solenoid is a positive ground or negative ground or if it matters on a solenoid. As long as I won't hurt the rest of the electrical system I'll switch the wires and see of that powers the switch on the dash. Thanks for answering I do appreciate it.

If the start button grounds to engage the starter, shouldn't the start (mid) terminal be electrically connected internally to the negative terminal? Might be able to check for continuity between the center and one of the main terminals.

Thanks Rich- anything electrical scares the heck out of me. I am always afraid I will fry the whole system (I have no idea why this just switched to italics) I will see if that test out.

Bill would the starter system be the same on a post war as a prewar ?
I've tried a couple of times with questions but have always said it was for a 38. I'll give it a shot by not saying what year. I'll just describe it as a 6 volt positive ground and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion.

1940/42 & 1946 Champion would be the same, I would think that 1947/55 would be similar.

StudeRich is the one to ask. There's a longtime member who owns an obsolete Studie parts store in Joliet IL, I forget his name.

Not anymore. I've had 10 Hawks, a 1923 Big Six, 1947 Land Cruiser, 1960 Champ, and...

Before I was a Ford parts guy, I was a Studebaker/Packard parts guy.
