Fuel sending unit

I know there is a lot of info posted on the fuel sending unit and where to get a replacement. My question is can you purchase just the resistor assembly part with the float for the sending unit? It has finally taken a dump and I am going to drop the tank to do the hutch and harpoon mods. I just cant see paying that kinda money if I am going to get rid of the mixing chamber. I found a pat Motorcraft PS-239 but says its for a F450. Any help would be appreciated. And if I missed a thread that deals with this I apologize. I have searched for hours and my attention span isn't that long.

Is the whole unit FUBAR or just the resistor? A resistor is cheap and easy to replace with minimal skills with a soldering iron.

I have not dropped the tank yet due to i would like to have all the parts on hand first. I checked the instrument cluster and appears to be good. I am not experiencing loss of fuel pressure. The gauge just shows what it wants when it wants. This is why I assumed the resistor part of the assembly is shot. I am not the most computer literate person and have looked for hours. I have not found a write up or a part number for fixing just that part of the assembly.

Sorry, I overlooked the fact that the resistor is a "variable input" affair with a wiper that slides along it. Could just be crud causing contact issues.
