Looking for information...

A while back, I was browsing this area and stumbled across some old, scanned in information. If I recall, it had everything about these old trucks including detailed engine, axle, transfer case, etc. information. It was a very long thread. I've been searching for much of the morning and can't seem to find it!

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've been through them and while this thread in particular is absolutely fantastic, it's not the one I was thinking of. Then again, there's always the real possibility I've lost my mind and what I'm looking for only exists in my imagination.

Of all the things I've ever lost, I miss my mind the least.

Rock on!

Thanks for that.

Do you see the blue line with User CP, Albums, FAQ? See the SEARCH on that line? It has a drop down search menu arrow, go to the "Advanced Search" option, top left side (search block) type in there what you are looking for and then go to the lower right column and highlight 73-79 forum. Select it and then you will have a detailed search just in the 73-79 forums.

What is your question or what are you looking for, reference material?

Also since you have a 93 and 96 truck any chance you searched in the wrong generation forum? https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum28/

No problem! You clearly put a lot of time into it!

I used that to the best of my ability. I'm actually a moderator on a different forum and have grown quite fond of the Advanced search.

It's about an hour and a half south of me and is owned by my wife's grandpa. I've been informed that I'll be receiving the keys so I'm trying to gather up information to do a quick tune up and once over before I drive it home. As it sits, it will start (with a little struggle) and drive around the yard but I haven't actually driven it on the road. The last classic truck (picture below) I drove home from down south was sound but had a vacuum leak at the carb gasket. That was a long, stressful drive!

This is a super old account of mine. We still have the 93 in the family but the 96 has left us. I need to update my profile with the current fleet's information.

Nice jeep truck. 78 4x4 F250 should have a New Process 435 transmission, maybe a T-18, but I bet NP-435 (granny/ low 1st gear) and New Process 205 transfer case.

Has the truck been setting for a long time? I would old school siphon out as much old gas as possible and put fresh gas in. Put a couple of plastic inline fuel filters in place, one before the fuel pump and one after (and before the carb).

Inspect the tires for bulges (cord breaks) or dry rotting. Top off ck all the fluids. Change the oil and put a quick tune up (plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor bug, air filter).

Get a cheap ol Chilton or Hanes manual for pics to go with the words for wiring diagrams and spark plug gap stuff.

Or be worry and stress free and just get it brought back home on a roll back.

Thanks! The Jeep has been quite an adventure. Just got it back on the road last weekend from a D44 rebuild.

The Ford is a 4 speed, if that says anything to you. I think it does have a granny low 1st.

It has been sitting for quite some time. I think it's pretty low on gas already so that will speed me up. I figured besides new gas and fuel filters, I have a Motorcraft 2150 on the shelf at home that came off the J-10. I'm considering rebuilding it and swapping it out for what I believe is also a 2150 on the 78. A proper functioning carb could go a long way.

Also on my list. I think the tires are pretty old though...

I'm considering this route as well. I have a good shake down distance to drive from one family member to another. If I'm comfortable after a "road side tune-up" and the shake down run goes well, I could walk it on home. If the shake down run is terrifying, I could leave it at location two and come back with a flat bed.

U-Haul doesn't recommend flat bed towing a 78 F-250 with an 09 Expedition. That's part of the problem...

Fortunately, I have some time to thing about it. The keys aren't in my hand yet and even if they were, there's no rush to get the truck off the property.

A few pictures I snapped of it. Oh, it also has a working hydraulic dump bed.

Yes you have to be careful what you tell them you are trying to tow with. And be careful with what you say you are putting ON the trailer.

If the computer says your 78 truck is to heavy, to long or to wide to fit on their trailer, they will say NO GO. Most places will not let you drive off the lot without hooking the trailer up to what the actual tow rig is..

Fine... rent a box truck from them to tow the trailer, they can not tell you no then. But then again they can again tell you your 78 will not work on the trailer. Then you try it anyway and God forbid some thing happens like damage to the trailer or even worse an accident, U haul will hang you out to dry if you put what is not suppose to be on there.

Maybe an actual wrecker roll back and be real worry and U haul hassle free. I am sure you know that is NOT the correct bed for that truck, it looks to be an 80 ish bed.

Truck looks like a good project.

If it is at all unsafe to drive to my garage, I will look into other, appropriate means to get it home. I need to give it a good once over before deciding anything.

Oh yes, I forgot about that. I was indeed told that's not the correct bed. He isn't even sure what it is off of.

I figured I'd post a followup. I was over there yesterday and tinkered with the truck some. It has at least 12 gallons of fresh gas in it now. Once started, I let it idle for 10 or 15 minutes to warm it up a little. Man this thing idles well! It sounded smoother than my J-10! The tires are in much better shape than I realized as well.

The current plan - driveway tune-up then take it for a cruise over to my wife's Mom's house, which is on the way back. Once I get there, I can check it out some more. If it's ready to drive back, excellent. If I'm uncomfortable with driving another hour +, I learned they have access to a flat bed vehicle trailer and said I could borrow it to get the truck home if I need.

Well, I believe it's time for this beast to come back home with me. My wife's grandpa has been asking me to get it running the last couple times I've been down to see them. This past Sunday, he said it's mine to take home and asked if I wanted to drive it home that day. My Mother-In-Law told us that she has access to a flat bed car carrier that I can use. I think I'll go this route since I've never driven it on the road. I'm sure it needs a full tune-up, all new fluids, brakes, and likely a set of tires before I put this thing into heavy duty use.

Couple questions:

1. How heavy are these? I saw somewhere that the general rule is these way close to 6,000 lbs. Granted, mine has hydraulics involved as well.
2. I daily drive a 2009 Expedition with the heavy duty tow package and 3.31 gears. Should I ask my friend with a 2500 diesel for help towing it home or do you think the Expedition would do it? I'll be traveling a country highway with multiple towns along the way probably totaling an hour and a half drive.
3. What size tires fit these things? Currently installed are 215/85R16.

I figured I'd pop in here to post how it turned out. The '78 is now safely parked in my garage.

A friend and I decided to take his diesel 2500 and flat bed down south to tow it home. We had issues with the battery so we ended up winching it on with some chain and come-alongs. Once home, I was able to charge up the battery well enough to start it and back it into the garage. All in all, it was quite a successful day. I think it took us about 6-7 hours total which included a round trip of about 120 miles, a break to visit with the family/do some chores for my wife's Grandma, and a lunch/battery charge break.

We did have to battle with a bunch of wasps, which kept us on our toes until we were on the road, "rinsing" the stragglers off in the wind. I will say, it became much more apparent how rough the body is once we had it loaded and at eye level.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll start a build thread of sorts and document my adventure with this beast.

It should be a good adventure.

Here's the beginning of the build with many more pictures. I'll be updating it as I go.
