Refresh my memory real quick?

I have a 1977 f150 4x4 that I recently replaced the power steering pump on, I have 33 inch tires and a 1978 crossover steer system..

When I'm at a full stop I cannot turn the tires (but when I'm moving its fine)

Now this my question, with my old setup I was able to turn from lock to lock when stopped (i think) but now I cannot.

Is this normal? I have no idea but I'm sure some of y'all have an easy answer.

I know "grow some muscle" or "its fine" however I have a small ricer wheel and when offroad it kinda sucks.

Thanks guys!!
-Bryan

Sounds like the pump isn't building enough pressure.
Why did you replace the pump?

My original pump had a crack on the body of the reservoir.

I'm running the ATF type F in my pump, any recommendations?

Recommendation, not really.
My initial thoughts are that you are not building enough pressure at idle, have you tried speeding up the motor and turning while sitting still?

Other reasons that the pressure might suck would be if the fitting that controls the pressure is allowing too little pressure through, either blocked, or if the orifice is missing it is allowing fluid to free flow.

Did you swap the fitting over from the old pump to the new one?

I have tried to turn at different RPMS, what do you mean by "fitting?" on the rear part of the reservoir?

I was trying to find a decent thread or picture of the fitting.
I did find this while I was looking,

The Thompson 'pencil neck' power steering pump was used from 1965-1977. It has a stamped steel reservoir and looks like this.

In 1978, the Thompson PS pump was phased out in favor of the Ford Corporate II PS pump. It has a plastic reservoir with a large diameter filler neck. It was in production until around 2003. The Ford C-2 pump looks like this. (C-2 pump from an '82 Bullnose in my '69 F100).

....pump-to-hose fitting on the side of the C-2 PS pump (this is on a 1990 Mustang GT 5.0L H.O. engine).

New pump could be bad, belt slipping, lines clogged, needs bleed again. I would get a new one better yet, get a Saginaw pump and might help to get a more common to these trucks size steering wheel.

Alan's p/s bleed procedures are spot on, and here is another way.

Bleed p/s the FORD way and it works every time!!!
1- Hook everything up
2- Fill with fluid
3- Jack up front of truck off of ground (Both front wheels)
4- Disconnect or Disable coil (So Truck CANNOT start)
5- Turn Steering wheel lock to lock about 5 to 10 times
6- Top off Fluid
7- Repeat Step 5
8- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
9- Crank engine over (Ignition Disabled) and turn steering lock to lock 5 to 10 times
10- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
11- Repeat Step 9
12- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
13- Enable Ignition
14- Start Truck and turn Lock to Lock 5-10 times
15- Turn off Truck
16- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
17- Repeat Step 14
18- Repeat Step 15
19- Repeat Step 6 (top off fluid)
20- Let Truck Down off of Jacks or jack Stands
21- Repeat Step 14
22- Steering should work just fine, have all the air bled out and have a quiet pump to boot!!!
