Hey, I'm new to the board, and I have a few problems.
I recently took my 98 Expedition in to get the State Emission test and it failed. The problems were the catalyst, EGR system, and Evaporative Emission. The mechanic told me I needed to fix one of these problems to pass the test. Does anyone know what I can do about this? Anything to save the most money cause I have school to pay for. Thanks in advance.
Didn't the mechanic give you a quote to fix the problems? A new catalytic convertor is really expensive, probably $300. An EGR valve is about $90 and I've never heard of replacing an evaporative emission, so I can't help you there. If you don't trust the guy at the inspection place, take your Expy to a reputable shop and have them read all of the codes.
Thanks for the reply, I'm gonna go get the codes read tomorrow and see what the problem is. Hopefully nothing expensive, but I'll keep you posted, cause I'll probably need help tomorrow.
If I'm not mistaken, the evap emission involves the canister that's located on the underside of the body, on the driver's side rear. I don't know much about this item, though.
