please help
1990 Aerostar 4.0, blows black smoke, surges, stinks like gas all the time, gas and ampage meter fluctuates. Put new oxygen sensor, pcv valve, plugs and wires, cleaned mass airflow, throttle body, still runs terrible. Very bad gas mileage. What else can I do?

Common problem, just like the 2.9 in the Ranger Bronco2, Fuel pressure regulator is most likely the culprit on the vacuum side, pull off the vacuum line at the fuel pressure regulator and look for gas in the line, you can also have someone turn on the ignition key and watch for fuel coming out of the regulator vacuum line port, also if you find this to be the problem also check to make sure the brake booster is not filled up with fuel also. How do I check the brake booster? Not too familiar with that, could you please explain a little better. And any other suggestions you have would be really appreciated.
