I didn't have a broken tip on the injector. No visible issues of the injector or its O-rings. Just an IDS graph that showed poor contribution from #7 when uncompensated. All flat when compensated.

Thank for your help Jack, next week I am taking it back to drop off for the night (so he can cold check) to have the Shop hook the IDS up to it. He said he will cold check, drive it, hot check. To look at Injector's, for $60 & since he didn't charge anything the other day, I feel that's ok.
I didn't want to heap too much on top of you, but now that they are going to check..I also thought at first it was my turbo. Pulled it off and saw a slight amount of oil in the exhaust housing. So I had a brand new Garrett sitting on the shelf in my garage just in case (guy I worked with had been an OE sales manager) and put that on without any difference in the smoke. Would have liked to kept that new so I could have sold it off if I never needed it.
So sorry for my nagging, I just don't want to see someone go through what I did.

No worries, I appreciate it. If your truck had the same symptoms as mine does, then I want to verify the issue.
I do NOT have $ for this right now, so I don't want to replace something for nothing
Did yours smoke after u came to a stop, then go away upon acceleration
At first I just noticed it at cold start, sitting in the driveway. As it progressed anytime I would stop .... Stop sign, stop light, traffic. There were times it was a good amount, almost
looking like a blown head gasket. Under load I did not notice smoke from the tailpipe, but if I got off the throttle at 15-20 mph I could see some from the exhaust. One of the last times before I kept it home it was bad at a stoplight. My reaction after having a glow plug tip wipe out a motor I'll admit caused a severe 'not again' sleepless reaction.
I checked coolant pressure, checked EGR channel (dry), replaced EGR valve, pulled and replaced turbo, started to think about split valve stem seals, broken rings, etc. AE showed nothing wrong with injectors a number of times, hot, cold, etc. So I finally got IDS after being frustrated and with uncompensated readings #7 dropped 50%, and #5 did a little too. I went only for #7 and no more smoke. The retest showed uncompensated balance was good after the replacement.
It's been almost a year and no more smoke issue, but with a little warmer temp my plan is to replace #5 and maybe #3 as history has shown they effect each other and I'm sure by now 5 is worse. Injector tip was fine under cleaning and magnification, the copper washer good and the O-rings were intact.
I could have saved myself a lot of grief and work if I just tested with the IDS. I made sure I tested dead cold, when the smoke was most prominent. I've read where guys drive the truck to the Ford dealer and get a good reading, and IMO that's the wrong way to test. A few decades of experiencing where mechanics have given a customer "no problem found" for brake issues when the problem was evident if you repeated exactly how the customer operated the vehicle has taught me how important variables matter.
Again, maybe you have a different issue then I did. Diagnosing through the internet is always interesting and problematic.
According to "Powerstroke Gearheads" the random smoke is caused by the Turbo and after leaving the truck overnight, they hooked it to the IDS, then drove around. The IDS is showing 4 Injectors falling off by -20% which is the slight shutter/misfire feel I am getting (under light acceleration) when she's cold. He still stands firm that the smoke is from the Turbo, even though there are 4 weak Injectors.
So I guess a Turbo & a new set of Injectors are in order
I absolutely want a PowerMax stage 1 Turbo....BUT the Injectors I am unsure what to do. I was thinking "warren" due to the cost ($800 +$1000 core, form ED) however the shop claims hardly anything is new in those and recommends I get Ford reman's for a 2003 (larger cc than my 2006) although way more $
I am broke right now & can't afford this crap, do u guys think I can limp the Injectors awhile (replace Turbo now)
How many of you have used the Warren Injectors and thoughts
Hey Bud just a thought , try cleaning up those Injectors and see what that does, save up for the Turbo unless you can swing it now , I would think the injectors when polished up should be ok.just thinking out loud.

I can change some things around & get the Turbo shortly if I need to, its the Injectors that absolutely kills me. I need to watch some videos on Injector replacement/cleaning then. Seems like a lot of work to do on a maybe, the way I see it is, they are now 10 years old, probably better just replace them. But thanks for looking out for my checkbook and making suggestions.
Ok, after talking to a couple people & blazing the internet for 2 nights, I am beginning to think I have a "STICTION" issue.
Considering using some Archoil-AR9100 to see what happens ....Thoughts
**********Part 2************
As far as the Turbo goes, I have been struggling with that immediate diagnosis also. I was thinking of just tearing it down to have a look inside & freshen it up (heard seals/hardware is real cheap). In fact today I went outside & pulled the Intake Tube to check for any end-play in the Bearing (NONE at all) & because I like to take pic's all the time, I took one to show the wife. However while looking at the pic @ 1:30 I noticed what looks like a damaged Impeller Fin...WTF
Is it worth messing w/these Turbos (may have 130k on it)
Anyone running a Wicked-Wheel & if so, input
Still think you have an injector issue. Used 9100 for years, didn't help my smoke issue when it occurred.
I'm not sure those wheels are a layered construction, but I'd take a closer look at the vane again and more pictures. Hard to say if that was not an original defect.
You really, really, really want a new turbo don't you?
^^^^^
I do really want a PowerMax.....However $ is currently an issue right now
Rebuilt Kit, Reinstall Kit, Compressor Oring & Billet Wheel = $365
$365 seems way better than $1200...IF it works
I will have to take a 2nd look, in case the camera is playin tricks on me.
Why were u running the Archoil then
I've always had the stock to my truck 2003 pilot injection program without any of the programming alterations to reduce the stiction issue. Was told by a good source never to if I liked my FICM.
So since the injectors get touchy from 50k miles on I could either replace cranky injectors (what Ford was desperately trying not to do under warranty, therefore the programming changes that stress the FICM more then it was originally designed for) or use the 9100 additive to keep the spools moving freely. It's not a good for life situation, eventually the injectors do require replacement.
You running synthetic or Dino oil? My understanding is syn will help keep stiction away, not sure anything can make it go away once you have it, some additives might mask it for a short time.

Rotella T6 a Full Synthetic & Motorcraft Filters, ALWAYS
BTW: Amazon should deliver the Archoil AR9100 tomorrow, so well see what happens.
I'm having almost the exact same problem as you. Cold start I'll get a light haze at idle, but seems ok on acceleration. Then when ECT/EOT is right around 160* I'll get some heavier white smoke under light acceleration, with some loss of power. It clears up when I get into the pedal a bit more. Then once I hit 170+ it seems to stop, although, it may still have some light smoke at idle that I just am not seeing.
I was literally about to make a post about it when I saw your thread!
