PM for injectors...?

I'm curious what some of the heavy-usage drivers think about preventive maintenance for injectors. I read on one site that said you should have them professionally cleaned once a year. My first take on this was that it seemed excessive unless you were driving a *ton*, but I'd like to hear other, more experienced voices.

While we're on the general subject, what about fuel additives for this purpose? Any of them worth using?

I'm not a big fan of mechanics in a can, but I will use gumout every year or so to clean things up. I don't understand the value proposition of paying someone to manually clean the injectors at today's labor rates. We use clean gas, keep the filters clean and haven't had to replace an injector in any of our current or previous vehicles.

I would use a quality pour in injector cleaner at every oil change. This will usually keep them clean.

Thanks, Jimmy. You and I seem to be running the same [basic] setup. What do you consider a "quality" injector cleaner? By pour-in, I assume you mean into the gas tank...

Fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank every now and then may help.

Don't have them cleaned unless necessary. The money you save on cleaning will quickly build up enough to pay for new injectors.

The manufacturers (Ford, GM, etc) do not recommend that the injectors be cleaned on a regular basis. I've heard that they stopped recommending it because injectors that are cleaned regularly will fail quicker than those that are not.

If you have high mileage and have noticed a performance droppoff, then cleaning them may be worthwhile.

Mine were gummed shut when I bought the engine from a junkyard, and they've run great for over 200Kmi since. I pour in cleaner about every OTHER oil change, and I switch brands each time, always staying with decent stuff. I like Valvoline, Techron, STP, & Slick50.
