i have an 86 f150 with a factory towing package i was wondering what size rear end is on there

It is 8.8" or 9" I can't tell you for sure without the door tag info.

my buddies 1986 has a towing package with a 9 in it has 3.55 gears in it.

yeah you can tell if the cover bolts are on the rear of the diff it's an 8.8, if they are on the front(removable carier) it's a 9in.
