we have 87 f-250 with a 351w. we put a new solenoid on it so that is eleminated. the key switch got alot of water on it from a leaky windshield. its either the key switch or the starter in my opinion. as soon as you conect the battery is starts turning over and wont stop until you disconnect the batrery. if this is confusing im sorry. if you need more information just yell. thanks
Or it could be the actuator rod in the steering column, I think that is what it is called. It is a rod that goes down the steering column, and often breaks. The result is what you describe, or the opposite.
Ran into the same thing with my 1898 F150- had to disconnect the battery, but prior to that there was an ignition switch problem. Had the switch and the actuator rod replaced and that fixed it.
The old switch was so bad that you didn't need a key to start it up ... just turned without the key. Also had a hard time shifting (automatic).
our truck is hard to shift to. its also a auto. yeah it seems to be the switch because when we changed the soleniod the starter worked right a few times and when you disconnect the battery its seems to disengage. thanks for the help. and also where did you where that actuator rod at.
I'd say you hooked up the wires to the relay wrong. The small R/LB wire goes to the small terminal. The wire to the starter goes to one of the large posts (usually the rear one) and EVERYTHING else goes to the other large post. It sounds like you have the starter wire on the same post as the battery.
I think I have the same prob, I still have not fixed it as of yet but I think it was because of the relay wired wrong. I connected the battery cable to the post closest to the battery and I think it supposed to go to the one farthest away from the battery and everything else to the post closest to the battery. sound a bit confusing but was wondering if screwing up and getting the post wrong couse the starter not to disengage?
