Steering Box

The next thing on my list of things to replace on my truck is the steering box. I have dealt with a lot of play on my steering for quite a while. I recently replaced the the ball joints and that helped but I think the box is just worn out. I have read all the great review on Redhead boxes but I just can't afford it now. What else is out there? Is our oem box a motorcraft or something else? What do you suggest?

There was an attempt at a group buy on the redhead box not too long ago, I don't know if they did it or not, or if it's still in progress. If it's still moving one of them should chime in soon and tell you about it. Have you tried adjusting it yet?

Have you tried tightening yours up?. Last thing I did after ball joints, rod ends, new leaf springs, bushings etc was to tighten the adjustment on top of the gear box. Nice and tight steering with no wandering at all.

There is an allen screw and lock nut combo on top of the gear box. Just be careful to only adjust it about a quarter turn then test it. Repeat. If you go to far you'll find that after you make a turn the steering will not want to return to center but will want to stick in a turn. I don't know it for sure but am told if you adjust it too tight and drive it like that you can damage the gearbox.

A little at a time and see if it helps.

Thanks everyone, yes I have tried tightening it up. After a couple of full turns I stopped. It seemed to help a little. I think its just time to replace. I just checked the pricing on motorcraft recons. and they are more expensive than Redhead. If I have to spend $300. plus I will just get a Redhead.

If you got to 2 full turns, you're definitely past where you ought to be...

Love my Redheads (2 vehicles)!
