Y block head Question

I've just installed some EZG heads on my refreshened 292. Installed it yesterday and started to hook up everything. When I got to the aftermarket temperature gauge the sending unit wouldn't screw into the hole in the head (rear drivers side). Checked the old heads and the hole is larger. Where the sender screws in (on both sets of heads) looks to be a plug of some sort. Question is; How do you remove the plug? I'm hoping I can just change the plugs and keep on finishing up the install.

The piece that the temp unit screws into is a press fit as far as I remember. All my heads, EZG and some 61-62 have the small sending unit, I don't know if there was one made for a larger thread. What year were your old heads?

This one for 54-56 heads might be what you need, it appears to be a larger thread

Old heads were EZCs not sure about the year as the engine was rebuilt. The engine is in my 56 F100.

I believe all the ECZ heads were 56. The part I listed in the link with the larger threads should work. The G heads have the smaller threads. I have no idea how to remove the pressed in part, never tried it

I'm gonna try pulling one out of my old head with a home made puller. If that works I'll try pulling the one out of the head installed on the engine

Good luck, let us know how it worked. I've never had to remove one on all the Y's I've built so I never gave it any thought.

I'm sure I've read that a puller is available. I just don't remember from where.

If you can find a stud that threads into the adapter, a socket large enough for the adapter to fit into and a nut and washer for the end of the stud, that would probably do it.

A pilot bearing puller might work if it is small enough to fit inside.

I'm going to try the stud and socket method. It's turned back cool here and the Mrs has some more Honey Do's for me, so it'll probably take a few days before I can get back to the problem.

Do you have a welder? Weld a piece of 1/2" threaded rod to a 1/4" or 3/8" iron pipe nipple, whatever size you need to pull. Use a piece of pipe or a coupling bigger than the part you want to pull out, some large washers on top, and a 1/2" nut. Turn the nut down and it will pull out. I made 2 of them, one for each size. I'd suggest you remove the teflon tape from the adapter if your gauge is electric, the temp unit works from a ground circuit and you don't want it insulated, if it's mechanical you'll be alright. You need a bolt in this hole or you will be leaking oil. The hole goes through to the push rod hole so the bolt has to be short enough not to hit the push rod. Normally this is where the ground strap to the firewall attaches.

It's Mechanical that's why I used the Teflon.

Got if fired up and the thermostat housing leaked like crazy. 3 gaskets & several reinstalls and lots of cleaning and sanding and the leak has now been repaired. Now I've got serious vacuum issues. Needle quickly fluctuates about 10 inches of vacuum.

Jim & Cliff the bolt is in the first picture I posted with the red ground strap attached.

Did you find anything on the vacuum problem?
