From what I have read, you either need to go LS or Selectable Locker. Driving on Ice with a Locking-diff surely wouldn't be fun. There are more that just ARB's(air locked) in the selectable diff world. You can get OX Lockers(if you can get them, cable locked) or a Detriot E-Locker(electrially locked) which is both a LS and a Locker. when it isn't locked it is a LS and when it is, it is well a locker. The Detriot would be my top pick. But for a true locker, i wouldn't recommed it in your situation. Doesn't sound like you off-road hard at all. A locking diff would change the driving characteristics of your truck more so than the others. You should also be able to get away with just something in the rear. and have at least 3 wheel drive. As for a shop, any good 4wd drive shop should be able to do it.
I've heard that OX is going out of bussiness because I was asking about them on this site and some guys were saying the rumor is true. So I myself am thinking about ARB's.
ok, thats what i will consider, a locker in the rear and not ls, cuz if ur stuck a locker will get u out and ls would not. know a guy who gets stuck with his limited slip.. thanks for the info ford and they rest of u guys. big insight to getting my truck ready for the frozen lake and getting in the un plowed long cabin road. know all we need is some serious snow!!!!!!!
dude lockers are way too expensive go with an auburn ls and you will be damn happy with it. it is without a doubt the best damn ls you can buy. a locker meaning one will run you over 1 grand and a half for an air locker and even more for a electric locker ( with professional installation) i have factory limited slip and its not too great but it gets me where i need to go with little use of a tow strap or a winch but my friend who has the auburn ls never gets stuck and he goes through some serious stuff

mountainman...
Locker and Ice = Bad
Locker will kick around a truck on the pavement. It will do more than that on ice. A Locker will give you max off-road tractions to conquour some of the nastyest stuff you can find. But on ice, where traction is not existant then nothing will help, you might want to get studded tires or chains or Don't drive on lakes.
But the e-locker...while the most expensive will do the best of them all.
i wont use the locker on ice, but in the snow on unplowed roads to get to my cabin and on the lake pulling the fishhouse around. i like the idea of both tires turning the same rate, much better then limited slip. if u think about it, the locker seems to me, the better way to go, but im new on this locker thing and i like the idea. solid rear axel and add chains, ill ramble in the wet snow on the lake pulling the fishhouse out. but thanks for the input bud.
