Diesel Fuel
Does it matter which to use?
I know 45 is more per gallon than 40.
Texaco calls their 45 "Premium Diesel".
Some people report better fuel economy and more power with higher cetane numbers. Amoco claims that its premium diesel has a cetane rating of 50+.
The cetane rating is in large part based on the stock crude that the diesel comes from. Cetane ratings can vary from barrel to barrel. That is why refiners hate to get pinned down on cetane ratings. They can vary a lot. All diesel in the US must be 40, which is a relatively low number, but one that your truck will run fine on.
I suggest that you try a few tankfuls of 45 cetane. Keep track of your mileage and pay attention to power, etc. See if the higher rating does you any good.
Stanadyne, Power Service, Lucas, Howes and other make fuel additives that increase cetane ratings 3-6 points. They also give you detergents and extra lubes. These generally cost 3-6 cents per gallon. I don't know how much of a premium the 45 cetane fuel is, but the additives might get the same bang for less bucks.
what about additives to cut the foam back? sometimes when I fill up i can only get like 22 gallons in it knowing it would hold 29.
