T19 info on shifter problems.
I got this free truck as I was told----
1: The engine was blown
1a: It needed a new thermostat and it holds steady pressure hot and cold so no cracked block or head like he thought and the head gaskets seem to be holding up) and no longer overheats and blows the coolant out.
2: The engine barely ran and does not now.
2a: The vacuum lines are crap and the carb needs rebuilding as the accelerator pump is toast and it leaks fuel $50-$60 or so.
3: The clutch stopped working.
3a: The line hit the manifold (while, he said, he was messing around under the hood BTW)and melted a hole in it, a new one costs $29
4: Brake light comes on.
4a: The pads are down to nothing (did I hear metal scraping lightly on the left front?) so the fluid is low. = brake job $????
Now for the one I am unsure of.
5: The 1 piece shifter is broken off and the trans was stuck in first.
5a: It's the T19, (all four gears have syncros and the trans code tells me so) and I took it out today assuming the previous owner (AKA slob) let the fluid get low as it was stuck in first and was going to tear it apart to see what the damage was.
Well, it was full of fluid (the correct type too) and everything seems OK!
I pulled the top off and the shifter forks work flawlessly and everything inside, including the syncros, looks as if it were almost new, reverse was a bit shiny on the contact face but looks fine.
So I put it back in!
Now I am looking at this and think perhaps the alignment groove, or the alignment pin, or the pins hole is worn, and was allowing the shifter to twist just a little bit and caused the binding in and out of gear as it works perfect with me doing it with a LONG 3/8 drive extension!
Or was there a bushing on the ball part of the shifter that kept the height just so?
The parts I have left over from (slob) are the 2 pieces of the shifter (rewelded together and the break was 2" above the pivot ball), the screw on cap, and a washer that goes on above the pivot ball, but under the cap.
Was there a spring that goes on between the "above the ball washer" and the top?
I already built a hefty C6 to go in place of the T19, but have not shortened the drive line yet ($100) and have yet to get the converter ($125) shift kit ($50)and shifter ($185) and money became way too tight to finish it any time soon, that's why I tore into the T19 and now, finding what I did, decided to go the cheap and easy rout as the trans is not as bad as I thought and I modified nothing as of yet.
I'm guessing a new shifter assembly and related parts might fix it?
At worst, a new top cover if it is the hole that is bad?
Any thoughts or confirmations?
