After I start my truck and it idles down a small bit it has a knock that almost makes it sound like a disel. For some reason this sound dosen't happen at higher RPMs, just at the idle. This happened right after I changed the oil also but I can't think of anything that would cause it to knock just by changing the oil except for the very remote possibility that one of the plastic rings that hold the cap in place on the oil bottle might of fell in and got through the funnel (doubt it). One mechanic thought it was a rocker arm but he said he honestly didn't know, so I put some lucas oil treatment in it which did absolutely nothing for it, I tried adjusting the timing which didn't help either. I've tried lots of various things but they have not helped at all. This sound is driving me absolutely insane... Any ideas?
Thanks
Chris

Please fashion a stethoscope or use a rubber hose to help isolate the location of the noise. Is it in the head / valve cover or in the block? and where? If you can give us a general location, maybe - just maybe we may be able to suggest a thing or two...
It often helps a great deal if you find out if it is cam speed or crank speed. You have a fast or slow sound, so you know whether or not it is valve train. Also, it can end up being a dented oil pan, loose exhaust parts etc. Also, the rubber hose or long screwdriver to transmit sound to your ear will be very valuable.
I have a '94 f-150 300 six that makes the same noise. at least i think. mine is after you sart it, it rattles right out for like 5 secs. then it just goes away. several people told us that it was probably a lifter leaking down, so we pulled the valve cover and did some work (replaced lifters, pushrods, rockerarms). the truck still makes the same noise. i don't even worry about it anymore. hope that gives you some idea of what it isn't.
