Sooooo....Big Red....my faithful single cab tank had an issue the other day. As I was getting on the highway and I went to shift into 5th, the entire stick broke off from where it bolts to the shifter that comes off the top of the transmission. There was a hairline crack in it back when I replace the clutch a couple years ago. But I kinda forgot about it. Till now of course. I welded the two pieces back together but I do not expect it to last very long. Sadly. Here is my predicament....I went to all the local yards and I cannot find one. The closest thing I can find on the internet is for a 99 and newer truck. I am not sure they are the same. Sooooo....where can I find a replacement stick? Or better yet since I am purchasing a replacement truck and Big Red will become a race truck, what do yall suggest as an aftermarket shifter? It is a 96 F250, rwd, 7.5L, ZF5 trans.
There was a guy a few years back making short throw shifters for the ZF but i don't think he's a member here anymore. I saw one on ebay a few months back but much like the member here, you have to send in the bottom core of your shifter for modification.
Curses! I assumed as much. This just sucks. xD I may just custom design my own short throw. I definitely don't want to do away with my ZF over the issue with a custom shifter. Lol. I'll just have to keep poking around. I could always hit up the Part Pullers on Row 52 to find one for me. My area I cannot find a single one. But I am not the only one with junkyards. Lol
I did just stumble across this. I think I could get my hands on another one of these and then just custom build a stick to bolt to it in the same way. You can see in my pic where mine broke off. Sad days.
i welded the shift tower on my 88 ZF and it held just fine for the next 8 years until i did the automatic swap.
a quick search only shows one hit for a short throw on evilbay for $215

The problem is I USED to have 15 or 16 cores that we modified. But after the last batch a few years ago, nobody sent their cores back, so now I have none to mod.
I am sorry to say but the ZF5 short throws from me are dead.
It is highly IMPRACTICAL to just modify one shifter, so please don't ask to do just yours.
Sorry I can't help.
Also, watch who you buy these modified from. I will be the first to admit that the first few I modded and welded myself ended up breaking due to poor welds. I then farmed out the welding and never had an issue after that.
I am not saying anything negative specifically about who is selling them on eBay, just be cautious is all.
Is this a common issue with the ZF transmissions? The shifter handles like to crack and break?
I'm just curious as I have the M5OD and I am contemplating a ZF swap.
No, ZF is far stronger overall. Daily driver or loaded/towing? If daily driver only, M5OD is fine. If moving anything, ZF has better ratios overall. Better at absorbing power from engine upgrades etc too
