I have a 97 4.2 v-6when the motor sits over night , with rain making the air damp, opon start up the motor runs rough. the engene light will flash a few time ,then stay on. I drive down the road about five miles before things clear up. when driving on the road the engene light flashes every time i try to get more power.the computer tells me that i have a miss fire in 5 or 6 cylender, it goes back and forth. the plugs and plug wires have been change twice, the coil pack was change and the crankshift sensor. It seems like the motor gets things warm to dry things up be for thing clear up. I need some ideas.
I had a recent problem with my 4.2L V6 1997 F150 where it was missing, had no power, and I tried everything the Ford service knew to do! Ford of course checked it on their computer analysis unit 5 times at two different dealerships. The plug wires were changed, fuel filter changed, mass air flow sensor checked, O2 sensor checked, crankshaft position sensor checked, fuel pressure while driving was checked; backpressure at catalytic convertor was checked....and everything checked out OK. Finally they tore off the front of the engine and found that the soft keyway in the harmonic balancer (that controls timing) had elongated (because it was soft--unbelievable). Actually the portion of the balancer that fits over the crankshaft had actually broken in two just behind the key way area! A new harmonic balancer took care of the problem and it is back to normal!!
THE BEST PLACE FOR YOU TO START IS TO PULL ONE OF YOUR SPARK PLUGS AND CHECK IT FOR ABNORMAL PATTERNS I.E. BLACK, CORRODED OR FOULED. IF NOTHING APPERAS OUT OF THE ORDINARY THERE, WARM UP THE ENGINE AND WITH IT RUNNING SPRAY SOAPY WATER ON THE WIRES (FROM THE COILPACK TO THE PLUG, EVERY WIRE) WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING. IF YOU SEE SPARK JUMPING FROM THE WIRES OR THE BOOTS OR THE TRUCK SRATRS TO RUN ROUGH OR DEVELOPE ANY TYPE OF A MISFIRE, REPLACE YOUR SPARK PLUG WIRES. IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY LUCK WITH THAT LET ME KNOW.I'VE GOT MORE TRICKS UP MY SLEEVE!
tpeople,
look under the thread of 97-03, F150. couple of us has/had similar problem.
Any check engine lites? You'r MAF sensor clean/seated good . This sits on the inside of the tube that connects to the air filter(the cone portion).
tomlongo
have u ever had anysounds that sounded to originate from in front of the driver's console that sounds like a old mercury activated switch? Like a thermostadt in a house?

I had the same thing w/#6. My end result was I removed the plenum air intake and cleaned out all openings of the carbon and gum build up.
