Hopefully will have enough money soon to put headers on my 460. They will be long tube going into a 3" collector and then probably reduced down to 2.5" pipes, unless another size is better.
D3VE-A2A heads (don't know if any porting has been done to them), unknown mild cam, Weiand Stealth intake, and a 750 carb.
I like a wide open sound but that's not practical all the time. What are your suggestions for a good aggressive or moderate sound? There's no radio in the truck to compete with, but one may be added later with some sound deadening material.
Flowmaster 70 series is very moderate. I put it on my dodge w/360 and it's got a low but soft tone at idle. At speed, it's not very loud at all. When I get new exhaust for my 68, I am going to go with something a little more aggressive.
Yes they do. I've run both 40 and 50 series on my vehicles. My favorite setup was Longtubes, an H-pipe and 50 series flowmasters all the way out the back with angled 4" tips on my 71 C10. Got lots of compliments on it. After a while I got tired of Flowmaster and switched to Magnaflow. Nice muscle car sound. On my Mustang I ran their Magnapack bullet style mufflers. With long tubes and an O/R H-pipe it sounded awesome. Not ridiculous loud for everyday driving, but nasty when you run wide open. The H-pipe really helped to deepen the tone. I have the standard Magnaflows on my 79 K10 shortbed with longtubes and it's almost too quiet for my taste. Nice and mellow for around town driving, but they wake up and get pretty loud above 3500rpm.
For my 67 F100 I'll be running a 460 with longtubes also and have the Magnapacks from my Mustang, some 3" Flowmaster knock offs I found at a swap meet and some Dynomax Bullets. I'm not sure what I'll end up going with, but I have options. When it comes to exhaust, it's all a matter of taste. I just never can be happy with anything for very long and end up changing things up before too long.
Magnaflow or Dynomax. I'd stay away from the Flowmasters. JMO.
Where will the exhaust exits be located?
2X. Flowmasters do just that but I've yet to hear some I like. Check out See if you can find some videos on the web of the above mentioned ones, Cheery Bomb glasspacks, and Borlas. Note, Cherry Bombs can be ordered in different links to be louder or more mellow and have a nice rumble. Borlas also have a rumble and used to be stainless steel. I am assuming still are.
This is easy! Hooker Aero Chambers! I have had them on my tuck for 10-12yrs. They sound awesome and flow exceptionally well. I have ran Flowmasters in the past and they are junk in my opinion. I found an independant test on muffler flow charts and the Aero Chamber was only 2nd to Hookers Max flo. They flow almost as well as an open pipe according to test. They have a great wide open sound. I am running an x-pipe and mine sound very good. To quote a buddy of mine " they sound like they're ripping tin"! I don't what that means but everybody that hears my truck comments on the sound.
100 people will have 100 different opinions. You tube has a vast collection of different sound clips. I wouldn't fall in to the which is the best muffler in the world with the most flow category. If you like the sound of open exhaust, but not all the time, you can put an exhaust cutout in, either electric or manual, then you can have open exhaust at the push of a button, or remove 3 bolts from each bank and bobs your uncle.
I've got the same set-up as you except my headers are shorties. I've always had Flowmaster 40's on it. While I do like the sound, I wouldn't do it on a daily driver. I always put Magnaflow on my everyday truck. The Flowmasters are loud ALL the time, even with the tailpipes out the back. Last summer I just had some 45's aimed at the ground after the mufflers. It was even louder, and every time I started the truck, a big dust cloud would blow out from under the truck and then settle on the truck. Once I get the short bed done, I'll be keeping the Flowmasters, but I'll be making tailpipes that exit out in front of the rear wheels.
Thanks for the sound clips, I plumbed them into my stereo. Too many choices, its going to take a lot of thinking to make a choice. Cut outs are an option, just not in the budget yet. The truck isn't a daily driver so it can be fairly loud.
If you click on one of the links after Bobby's video, you can see/ hear it from the rear view.
Bobby, I don't know what it is, but I LUUV driving my truck around with the hood off too! Just watching that big block lean over as you push the pedal down........
