Okay I have an ext. cab short box that was repainted by our friends at Maaco (like this before I got it). Anyway the paint was sprayed over the old paint and appears no primer went down prior to the newer paint.
So...my questions are:
1. What made '80s paint so crappy?
2. Any ideas on how much this would run me to get repainted properly? Obviously I will probably have to strip all the old crap off first.
3. What brand of paint should I go with? PPG, Dupont?
All major companies have good paint. Going Dupont, R-M, HOK, PPG, and other good brands will get you what you want. Usually people get locked into a company and product, get familar with it's usage, and therefore, swear it is the only way to go. Nothing wrong with that. It's just the way it is.
What it costs you will depend on the color, and the 'value line'. All major companies have different value lines (in other words, the grade of paint).
I have done show car finishes using Diamont (by R-M) for the basecoat and Select for clearcoat. Diamont is a medium value paint. Select is cheap clear. Prep was where I was able to get the show car finish.
Color wise I was looking for the color that came on my truck initially...a medium (maybe a bit darker) silver. Nothing looks worse than different color exteriors and different color interior doors!
What type of value grade is on newer vehicles?
By using the cheaper clear coat, does that compromise the durability of the paint/finish?
Ahhhhh, excellent question. Not sure. I suspect it's like everything else. The more you pay, the better you get. On a $40,000 car, you probably get top of the line.

The answer you get depends on who you talk to. Some say, clear is clear and it makes no difference. Others say, higher quality clear has better UV holdout. If I'm doing a higher end job, I use Diamont (approx $160/gallon). For the standard repaint, I use Select (approx. $66/gallon). Although I prefer Select because I like the way it sprays, in the end, I can't tell the difference between the two after everything is sanded and buffed. If you're interested, go to my site and look fo the For Sale link. The finish you see on the VW is Select clear.
