Sluggish Performance

I have a 2003 F250 with a v10 engine with a 4-speed overdrive auto tansmission. After about 1500 miles on it, I took it on a 2000 mile family vacation and it ran great. It has about 5,000 miles on it currently. I'm not towing anything. Just recently, about three weeks ago, it started running just a little sluggish, mostly when it kicks in to overdrive but a little all the time. It feels a little boggy. I called a local dealership, and they said that if there was anything going on, the engine service light would go on to show that it picked up a service code. This hasn't happened yet. I haven't brougt it in yet for them to take a look at, as I was thinking about going through a few tranks of gas to see if I may have gotten a bad batch. I was wondering if the heat down here in Texas, 100 degrees everday for the last month may have something to do with the sluggish performance. I was also wondering if it's possible to run higher octane than 87. The owners manual says to not run anything higher as the truck was set up to run at 87.

Most likely some bad gas or even some small particle blocking the fuel line someplace. Like you say, give it a couple tanks and see if it goes away. If not, you have a warranty claim issue w/ driveability and the dealer can diagnose/fix it for you (hopefully).

Not much help, I know, but these V10's are rock solid in most cases. Cross my fingers it's just bad gas.

Just a thought but how about disconnecting the battery for about 45 minutes to let the shift program reset? Also maybe put a bottle of that dri-gas stuff in the gas tank that removes water from the fuel. Possible there's some water in there. Those are longshot suggestions but they're cheap, quick and simple!

Three issues can cause performance problems and NOT turn on the check engine light: 1.) low ,or no, fuel pressure. 2.) clogged or restricted exhaust system. 3.) dirty, or bad, mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Your problem sounds like a bad MAF sensor. Really no way to T/S it. The jury is out if cleaning them really helps. You can try by gently rubbing the 2 small wires inside the MAF housing with Q-tip swabs dampened with isoprophl alochol (sp.) A new MAF is around $150.00 to $160.00. sounds like you are still under warranty. I would ask the service advisor to replace the MAF sensor, if they can't find anything else.

Good luck. Let us know what happens so others can learn from your experience.

You might try a can of injector cleaner in your next tank of gas. Can't hurt anyway.
