Well, I thought I had a leaky dizzy o-ring, but it turns out I'm leaking between the intake and block, at the rate of a quart every 100 miles. So I am gonna go get an intake gasket set (print-o-seal, of course) and a tube of permatex RTV. Could someone give me a better idea as to the procedures? Torque specs would be nice too. Its a 72 f-100 302, no emmisions, so all I have to take off are the distributor and fuel lines. I know that less is more when it comes to RTV, but i need some pointers. Thanks fellas!
In my opinion you should use the cork end seals that come with the intake gasket set, and just use the RTV in the corners like the factory did. I have never personally used RTV on the end rails of a Ford without having a leak, and I have never had the cork seals leak when installed right.
Of course, there are many people who claim that RTV is better, however it was really better, that's what the factory would have used, and that's what the gasket makers would recommend instead of shipping cork end seals with every set.
Regarding torque specs, most manuals say 24 ft-lbs for the lower intake. Use the right sequence and do it in steps.
RTV works great for this seal as long as you clean the block and intake real good with solvent. Check with a white rag. If you see any oil in the rag clean it again.
Then put down a good thick bead. At least as wide as the entire gasket surface area. Follow the directions on the RTV tube if any "skinning time" is needed.
Carefully put the Intake on and try not to move it around a lot. Just set it straight down.
