I'm looking to replace the stock intake and have some questions: 1) How difficult is this process? 2) What is the difference between the brand name intake kits and the inexpensive ones sold on Ebay? 3) After installation, is it necessary to disconnect the battery and if so is it just the negative terminal? As you can see by these questions, I'm a novice so any help is greatly appreciated...
Cold air intake,,,,,am I correct in that you mean removing the old plastic air box assembly and replacing with a kit with the exposed K&N filter??? The reason I ask is there are actually 2 kinds of systems. 1) The one I just mentioned which actually picks up warm ait inside the engine compartment. 2) There is a somewhat expensive kit that adds a K&N type filter, larger air box but still attaches to the inside fender well to access cold air.
I have only dealt with the first type and they are easy to install. The difference between name brands and the e-bay knock-offs is foremost the filter. The e-bay knock-offs don't use a genuine K&N filter and I have no idea of it's quality or life expectancy.
If you are interested, my buddy just sold his 1999 Expy and took off his intake kit before selling (was on his truck for 6 months) and he is looking to sell the kit as it won't fit on his 2003 Expy. The kit had a genuine K&N filter and the nice looking mandrel bent chromed aluminum tube. E-mail me if interested bigblaze@optonline.net
I am not sure if you need to disconnect the battery but I disconnected the negative terminal when I began to install mine and by the time I was done (30 minutes later), I reattached the battery and all has been fine. I could feel the difference with the kit installed.
Yes Bigman, I would be removing the stock air box and replacing it with the exposed K & N style air filter with the mandrel bent aluminum tube. I'm looking at one of those knock offs on Ebay.
I got mine for $35+7. You have to mount the MAS backwords and I think that is why my Check Engine light is on. Came with no instructions, but looks and sounds good.
