I have read a numberof threads on this issue but wanted to run the situation by this group as asanity check.
Some informationabout the truck
2004 Excursion, Motor has a December 2003 built date listed on the valve cover
Bullet proof complete by Hallas performance just prior to Mike's passing (3 years ago). ARP, EGR, Oil Cooler, lifters, etc…
Newer batteries, DC amp 185 alternator, newer starter, she cranks hard and fast…
~230,000 miles
Here is thesituation:
Starts good and fast when cold, even subzero temperatures.
She cranks long and barely catches if I make a short stop at a store or restaurant. A few hours later or the next morning is fine…
I found the following codes:
P2284 - Injector Control Pressure Sensor Circuit Range/Performance
P2291 - Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking
P0528
I took her into the local Ford Dealer for diagnosis and here's what they reported.
ICP tests good and has the latest pigtails.
They reported a leak in either of the following.
Oil injection pump
Estimate of 8.5 hours to repair.
Under the Valve Cover Gasket.
Estimate of 3.5 hours to repair.
So here're thequestions I have.
Does this diagnosis sound appropriate? Is it reasonable that they do not know which area is causing the problem?
Are the hours reasonable estimates for the repairs?
Assuming I go ahead with these repairs, is there anything else I should have them look at while they're in there?
I appreciate anyadvice or experience you can share! This forum is an awesome resource andcommunity that has helped me manage the 6.0 expectations and really make it anenjoyable vehicle/powertrain to own. Looking forward to getting through thisproblem and enjoying many more miles!
You do have a HPO leak, being an early motor the HPOP is almost most likely the cause. Especially if they ruled our ICP

I will also add, do not let them tell you they "have to take the valve covers off" to verify the leak. You will end up paying another $$$ on labor and likely it was the HPOP to begin with.
This sounds like another classical case of early build HPOP syndrome, and there seem to be a lot of them the last few weeks it's almost uncanny.
they can air test the truck to see if a leak "under the valve covers" but most likely, as mentioned, it's the HPOP. They could maybe use a mechanical gauge to check pressure, but I've really never heard of that, it would need to go as high as 3000psi.
No, the Ford pump has not been upgraded. If you can afford the extra cheese id upgrade to the adrenaline stock output HPOP

The oem pump will always be prone to fail on 03-04 trucks.
I think Ford offers a two year warranty on both the parts and labor. If I buy an after market and it fails I'd have to pay again for the labor to replace it. Sound right?

If you have it done under their labour yes. Also when it fails you'll be down for another week, and another, and another. From what I know, the adrenaline HPOP has a very small failure rate, and I don't say that because I've heard of any failures, I say it because everything has opportunity to fail.
