Frankentruck needs help please

Howdy all, I ran across a Frankentruck that I was asked to work on. Its a 1981 ford F100 body with a 5.0L V8 out of a 1978 Ford Fairmont, then the F100 Originally came with a 4.9L I6, and I was asked to do a complete coolant overhaul, new everything. So as I was snatching junk out of the truck, I noticed it did not have a thermostat in it originally. Now I have no idea about this truck since its not mine, but I want to make sure my work is correct before I give it back to this guy. SO can someone please tell me which direction this thermostat goes in this engine? I have read a lot of people saying the spring goes towards this direction, and then others say it goes this direction. I am guessing the water pump pulls coolant from the lower radiator hose, then throws it through the engine and then the thermostat would open up and push hot water into the upper radiator hose? Anyways, thanks to all!
