Truck or Excursion

I have too many diesels and the wife has had enough and wants the driveway space "reduced"

I have two 4x4 2000 7.3 X's and one 12v Dodge 2500 5sp 4wd. I am definitely keeping one of the X's but I cant decide if I want the truck or the X. I restored the Dodge so it is in pristine shape with only 144k on the Cummins. The X is high mileage but has a lot more creature comforts than the Dodge. I LOVE the 12v but even restored with new interior/paint/suspension the 2nd gen Dodge's are just kinda junky. I can pull a house and it is as reliable as can be but the brakes suck, the headlights suck, it rattles, rowing gears is a pain in traffic, no backseat leg room, etc. Everyone tells me to keep the truck but I am leaning towards a dual Excursion family and buying a 10' utility trailer for those "when I need a truck bed" moments.

What say you?

That's what I did. Bought an X, sold the F250 7.3 Extended cab and bought a 5X10 5000# axle trailer to haul whatever I need.

Trailer sits 99% of the time. Everything else fits in the X

There's never 'too much stuff'. There's only 'not enough storage'.
Good excuse to buy more land!

If you get rid of the truck, you still have to park the trailer (nearly the same space, give or take). I'd say keep 'em all.

I would sell both the Ex and the truck and replace with a trailer.

My thoughts too. I don't use the bed that much and even when I do getting stuff on a lifted truck with 35's aint as easy at 45 as it was at 30. A trailer is nice and low with plenty of strap points for bulky loads and ramps.

Yeah, I got a couple of acres but my wife views "vehicles" as Beverly Hillbillies but a trailer as Suburbia acceptable. I know, I know but I ain't gonna win so I am folding like a cheap Wal-Mart tent in a downpour. Insurance on a Craigslist trailer is a lot cheaper than a vehicle too.

I sold off my last pickup and now use a 5X8 utility trailer for hauling whatever needs hauling, sooo much better with the low bed height and handy ramp for loading rolling stock.

Unless you have a 5th wheel or slide-in camper.. nothing you can do with the truck that the Excursion can't do (provided you aren't hauling DIRT or rocks). Plus, you have a permanently covered 'bed' in the Excursion.

Keep the Excursions and sell the Dodge. I like the utility trailer much better than the pickup for all the reasons mentioned above.

Thanks guys. Seeing everyone's opinion that lines up with what I was thinking helps. The Dodge is going....

However........

I actually have 3 Excursion but I was planning on getting rid of the 6.0 one all along so I didn't mention it (yeah, I know I have a Craigslist problem- don't judge). I was just talking with the wife and she said she wanted me to fix the 6.0 and sell the 7.3. She said it was "prettier" and she liked the way it sounds and how quick it is

My day just went from bad to worse

Agree with all of the previous comments to ditch the pickup. From your first post description, it seems like you're already leaning that way anyway and are looking for a nudge from us to make it the final decision.

I've hauled stuff from china hutches to full 3-seat sofas in the back of the Excursion. I rarely keep the third row installed, it usually sits in a giant sealable baggie to keep it clean and in good shape in storage. There's no a lot that won't fit back there without the third row. Hauled four assembled engines no problem, although getting them in there was a bit like Tetris.

Heck you don't even need to BUY a trailer if you need it temporarily. Rent one, there's places that'll rent out around Houston that aren't the usual U-haul junk. Like single and tandem axle trailers, ELECTRIC brake over U-haul surge/hydraulic brakes, and even enclosed ones. I rented an enclosed 8x14 trailer for a three day for a messily $108. If the trailer is going to sit most of the time, I'd just forgo the expensive of buying one and rent when you need to. Plus that allows you to save trailer money for Excursion upgrades and such, or fixing up the 6.0

Sounds like the best answer may be to trade in the wife on a more reasonable model...

That would cost me a lot more than any bulletproofing of the 6.0. Hell, I would probably go from bulletproofing to bullet ridden.....lol

@Krazee Mat - Good point on the rental. However, based on my wife wanting the 6.0 I might be better suited for a dual axle vehicle trailer with a winch to serve as a utility trailer and 6.0 support...

I kid, I kid - I know there are a lot of 6.0 guys here but having one in the driveway that was just trailered home gives me the "right" to bitch....hahaha

LMAO!

Based on her wanting the 6.0 X, maybe you ought to keep the Dodge too, for the swap that you were thinkin' of before!! Only have to sell one (complete) vehicle that way...

Ok so I was right, sell one Ex and the truck. 3 Exs on the driveway is selfish - think of all those poor people who don't have an Ex!
