Oil pressure decreases when accelerating

Oil pressure decreases when accelerating

I have a 1987 F350 crew cab dually
6.9 diesel 164k miles
Banks Sidewinder kit.
PO had an over transmission installed with electric selectable OD
Factory and mechanical gauge
Correct oil and full. Not over temping
Good pressure at idle and also once speed levels out.
But decreases when I accelerate
Runs great
Thought maybe the pick up screen is partially clogged
Put extra oil in it to see if maybe the pick up tube was sucking air at the pump flange No difference.
Was looking at the pressure reg but that would seem to be the other
direction.
Anyone else have this problem
Getting ready to pull the pan

check the integrity of the seals on the oil cooler. i had an 84 F250 6.9 where the seals hardened up and died causing a severe oil leak(used up 20qts in 50 miles of operation). i dont recall any loss of oil pressure until the oil level was way down, but its possible there was some loss before it started leaking.

How much extra oil did you try? I'd try at least a qt.

There is no external oil leaks
And it doesn't use oil
Oil and filter has been changed
Was the same before
Added 2 extra quarts to see if the oil pick up tube flange at the pump was the problem or maybe a crack in the tube
No difference
Acts like it is running out of oil
Thats why I was thinking the screen might be partly clogged


Well I guess Ill wait till it warms up a bit and pull the pan

Sounds like you are due for either a set of bearings or wrist pin bushings. When you accelerate one half of the bearing gets pushed closer to the crank and the other half moves away from the crank leaving a larger gap on that side. That is where the pressure loss it happening. Wrist pins do the same thing. How much pressure are you losing? what weight of oil are you running? Which brand of filter are you running?
