The 1937 conversions were a learning curve for Mr. Darrin. An original, but modified cowl was used. Even with added angle iron braces, it still proved to be flimsy, for lack of a better word. Hence the move to a cast aluminum cowl. One tap on the cowl told you it was not sheet metal. My source is the owner of the aforementioned '38. He knew quite a bit about them. His was one of 17 or so made in '38. As the ads used to say, "Ask the man who owns one." They were called Sunsets by some due to Darrin's shop on Sunset Strip.
Factory Packard-Darrin's are 1940/42, other's were specials created by Dutch. I'm aware of several 1939's (look exactly the same as 1938), never seen a '38 in the flesh.
Not only saw a 1938 Darrin, but rode in it. They drove it from Poulsbo, Washington to North Dakota.
Here 'tis... but not in the flesh. As mentioned it was treated to a later front clip. This was taken while it was for sale following the owner's death. Wife didn't want it nor did the kids. That would be my cousin Gail making the comments on this page. http://www.oldparkedcars.com/2011/05...-roadster.html
