Question 360 reliability

I have a 1970 F-250 2wd 4spd with a 360 in it and i have not yet put it on the road, i was wondering how reliable you guys think this truck will be, its all stock except that the heads were milled by the previous owner. I would like to sell it for a powerstroke but dont quite have enough money for that at the time. I was also worried about what kind of mpg i would be getting with it, i dont want to go broke running it. Thanks alot

I would say you would be hard pressed to find a stronger truck than a 70 F-250 with a BB 360 and a 4spd. Prolly has 3.73 gears(if i was to guess) 13-15 MPG also a factor is tire size (OD).

The 360 and np435 can take whatever you dish out for the most part if you keep them lubricated. only thing is they are heavy trucks and you want to make sure you have good brakes all around, power or disk if possible. And power steering might make driving it alot less stranious. I myself whouldn't choose to own any other year truck unless it was a free powerstroke!

the 360 is a great motor i grew up around one and now have a few. i didnt think it got that good of gas mileage tho i never checked so. if u want ,ore power and a little extra mileage dual exhaust will do this, it has for me. Header would help a lot. But if yer not wantin to do that u wont know what yer missin lol.

Hmm I wish i was gettin 13-15mpg with my 360 (also np435,3.55gearing and 35in tires)
Id say im gettin around 8 or 9 mpg, i also have dual exhaust, the 360 is stock. And yeah, it has been reliable for me so far. (if you happened to read about my little oil incident)

I just bought a 1974 f250 hi-boy. It is a full-time 4x4 with a 360. It only has single exhaust (I will change that) but the previous owner kept immaculate mileage records, and averaged 12mpg, this with fulltime 4x4 and single exhaust.

I his post it shows a 2wd truck, I can see getting 8-9mpg with 4wd alot of the time they had 4.11 gears or better.
I was getting 15-16 with my 77 351M C-6 auto 2wd supercab. But then again i did change out for 2.75 gears. Its not like your going to hurt a C-6 or a 4spd with tall highway gears at all in a 2wd.Myself I like the quiet running with tall gears. No sky high engine at 75MPH on the interstate.

360 reliability

My '74 4x4 F250 highboy with the original 360 got around 10MPG with 4.10 gear and a 2-bbl carb. With 33" tires... and part-time 4x4.

But, I usually ran it over 70MPH. If I ran it around 55, it would go up to 12 or more.

Ditto on the 360 and 435NP. Can't kill'em. I got the truck almost 15 years ago w/200K miles on it (100K on second motor), and I beat the heck out of mine for 6 years before going for a 390 buildup. A few years ago, I took down the 435NP to re-seal it and had a chance to look at the bearings and gears. NO wear whatsoever on anything. No scoring, no noise, NOTHING.

That's with over 300K miles on the 435NP overall. Now, the Dana 60 rear is a different story Try not to spin one wheel too much...

It does not have the NP435 in it, its got a Borg Warner. Although i do have a spare NP 435 that i took out of a 71 F 350. Do you guys think i should switch? Thanks.

Leave well enough alone for now.

The 435NP is a four speed, but 1st is not synchronized and is so low you might never use it on the street. When I had my stock 360, starting in 2nd, then shifting to 3rd, hitting 3rd the RPM's were too low to get any real power out of it.

With your 4 speed, the gears are probably closer so you don't have that gap between 2nd and 3rd.

I'm sure the 435NP is more dependable though... if the Borg Warner goes, THEN put the 435NP in!

I have the 360 with a NP 435 in my 69 F350 and like it very much. I especially like the granny low of the 435 for pulling. These trucks were made for pulling and the power they produced with the low gearing, not for cruising. To me the F250 and F350 are a work truck and nothing else. My F350 gets 11 to 13 mpg with the 4:10 rear end and I don't take it too easy on the pedal.
