How do i go about trying to find out what rear end is in my 85 f-250 302 efi, 4 speed manual and if it would make a good tow vehicle on the flatlands of iowa and illinois.
My axle tag code is "3 08 88 7M19".
I think that means 3.08 gears, but am not sure what the 88 (8.8 in ring gear?) and 7M19 mean. Can anyone help?
I was thinking of changing the gearing to 3.55 or 3.73, and am trying to learn as much as possible about it.
Can I replace the gearset in the housing I have with a Powertrax unit? Or would I be better off swapping out the whole rear for one from another truck?
What would the tag code read on a rear with Limited Slip 3.55 or 3.73?
The axle tag would seem to indicate a 3.08 ratio open diff 8.8 inch rear end. It seems a little weird though for an f-250. I would think it would have a Dana 60 or the Visteon 10.25?? But then again I've never owned one so ??

Your '98 F150 has an 8.8" gear with a 3.08:1 ratio. You can have the ring & pinion changed to a different ratio and, if they have one to fit, install a Powertrax limited slip. Ask around at some of your local axle or 4x4 shops for info and prices. IMO, changing gears is not something the 'average joe' can do right.
