How long do auto makers have before they do not have to honor recalls?

I'm not sure I understand the question; if a recall has been issued for a particular vehicle, then they honor it NOW. If the matter is still under investigation, then they'll wait till NHTSA says there's a problem and they issue the recall. Is there something you're having a particular problem with? Maybe we can help if we had more details.

If it is a safety related recall, they have to honour until it is required.

If it is a minor non-safety recall, I'm pretty sure Ford doesn't have to honour it once the car has been sold by the original owner.
