Tail Gate Hinges

Good morning and Happy New Years to All!!

Could anyone share some pictures of their custom Tail Gate Hinges, also any creative Ideas for latching as I would rather not use the chains.

Thank you,

Angelo

Kept chains to look original but used latches bought from Mac's to hold fenders and tailgate tighter together

Not to hijack, but did you make that tailgate with the V8 symbol or is it off some earlier truck? Looks very cool!

You should indicate the year of your truck since the tailgates are not the same from 48-56.
Here is mine, a 49

Here is how I fabricate my tailgate hinges using the Pro's Pick hiding hinges. Once painted the hinges are almost completely hidden by the tailgate. The rear sill in this photo is a length of .125 wall 2x4 rectangular stock...I like to keep it clean.

Very nice Charlie, I fabricated this same idea out of my head this afternoon, I may have made them larger and will scale them down to look more like yours as they will defiantly hide/blend in with the painted body colour!

Thank you guys I appreciate the quick response.

The tailgate is a donor. The 1 tons box is wider than the F-1 and had to find one that would fit and that was it. Thought it looked good.

Classic Hauler has an interesting tailgate latch. A little pricy but looks interesting

Man, I've bought so many latches. I tried the hidden thumb latches, and none of them seem to go far enough through the sheet metal to provide a sturdy hold. An 89.00 expense I didnt seem to like. Then I ordered the same latches that Bill has on his red truck above. $125.00 from MF. I hated the fact that Id have to drill through the side of the body and have visible nuts on the outside of the bed. I tried and tried to find something that could be bolted in place and wouldnt show through.
I finally found these hinges with a removable pin
Heavy Duty Hatch Hinge ? Standard | Unicorn Stainless
and these nice pins from eBay
5 16" x 1 1 2" Grip 17 4 Stainless Avibank Ball Lock Quick Release Pin T Hdl | eBay

Worked perfectly! Pull a pin on each side and drop the tailgate

The hinges that you installed are also a marine product (316ss) like the catches that I used. I have the same basic hinges on my boat for a deck hatch.
Looks good!
