If you discovered that your Excursion had a leaking windshield during heavy rain, would you have it removed and resealed or just have it replaced? I think it is factory glass which makes me want to reseal it as I know aftermarket glass can be thin junk, but the one glass place I called wants to replace it and said the old one will be prone to leaks easier??? Is this guy lazy or should I replace it?
I had a new one installed 4 years ago, it started leaking pretty soon after that. It was recommended that I put some butyl rubber in the spot it was leaking. This stuff stays flexible and flows a bit into the void. It worked fine to seal the leak, however the rubber trim has now pulled off of the windshield, starting in that spot where I had to stuff the butyl rubber underneath.
I had the same issue of a leak in heavy rain, opted to change the windshield because the shop that does my work said that they suspected there would be issues when the windshield was removed. Windshield was $130 (Not OEM) so I figured I would change the windshield, upon removal, rust as suspected. This is a southern excursion with no rust. Of course, I purchased the EX used and the windshield had been changed. I was told the rust is caused by damage to the paint removing the old windshield and use of improper sealant. See pictures.
I have heard its thinner and more prone to cracking and rock chips although I don't know that to be true. I have had a friend who said his window was wavy like old lead glass. I just know I want to correct this before something expensive like my GEM gets wet
I just had mine done. I was having the same problem. While you can opt to reseal your windshield and there's nothing wrong with reusing the factory glass you need to be ready to pay to have it replaced. The only way to remove the glass is from the inside and it will more than likely crack during removal. Safelite doesn't do reseals btw, they replace only.
I have an 03 EX Limited 6.0 and I am afraid to change my windshield with the amount of rust around the top of windshield.As a result I have water damage to my fuse box and to Gem module behind glove box.Take my advise if you have any leakage into interior get it fixed asap..............

Reason: spelling
When I bought mine it was cracked (both my old and new X) and I wanted the OEM Superduty glass without the blue tint at the top and the words "Superduty" in the center. The glass doesn't fit per their computers so you have to just have them order it and pay in advance. It's an OEM Ford windshield so no thin or wavy issues
~~~~~~~OH!!!! One last thing, you CAN haggle with them! It took me 3 days, and me calling 3 different windshield places getting quotes but in the end I saved about $100. I went with the first place I called but they ended up calling me back a few times and every time dropped their price a few dollars more. ~~~~~~
My Ex 7.3 leaked water into the GEM module, anti theft, and fuse box. Massive issues drying out and finally got it all working. First step after I got it all back working was go to safelite pull windshield and resealed. They cleaned all the corrosion treated the windshield frame used proper sealant, cleaned the windshield to insure good seal and gave a life time warranty. I drove yesterday in heavy rains with no issue. They did tell me if the windshield broke during the work I would to pay for another. I parked the truck in the sun to warm the windshield before I took it to them Took them about 3 hrs working on the truck to do the work, they did a fantastic job. I would only buy a windshield if during the reseal it broke.
I think I will let them try to get it free without cracking and attempt to reseal. I am hoping there is no corrosion.if it breaks I will get a new window. My in laws do auto glass, but they are back in AR, and I am not moving back until May. I would like to get it fixed before the rainy season.
