I won't argue with the fuel economy, but I can state that the V10s are much cheaper on the used market (just as it was new - V10 was a $700 option vs diesel $4500 option) so it depends on how much you drive as to how long it would take to recoup those costs. For me, only 5000 miles/year, I would likely never recoup that fuel cost in my ownership.

Mine's been turned up via a tuner that was thrown in with the deal when I bought it, even so, you'd spend thousands more to get the V10 to do what mine does. I never expected the acceleration it's got til I test drove it before I bought it 6 years ago (and that was with 258K on the odometer)

I've driven both, and the V10 definitely had more power, but the V10 was a 1 ton van while the 7.3 was in a 1 ton SRW 4wd truck. Towing 6-8k the V10 was getting 7-8 mpg while the truck does 11-12. I think the van had about 250k miles on it when the company got rid of it and was still going strong, even with irregular maintenance.

I've seen more than a few 7.3's that ran 14 second 1/4 miles. And these were F350 duallys. Ain't seen any V10's doing that

If you want to argue "what will make the most power when tuned" then you would obviously want to choose the forced induction motor every time.

First of All ...I Have a PSD Van...the V10 is a nice motor BUT it cannot carry or even smell the JockStrap of a 7.3, especially Towing a Trailer..I have a PCM Flash so I am easily over 550 lbs ft. of Torque..Now add Stage 1 Injectors and you are close to 800 lbs ft. Can a V10 do That ? MAYBE if it was Twin Turbo ...To the OP how much money will it cost when you grenade the V10 towing that slightly overloaded trailer on a Hot day ? The only way you grenade a PSD is by putting Gasoline in the Tank or other Stupid Chit...Owning a Diesel requires some level of literacy and knowing how to use a Torque wrench among a few other things...If you want a similar Gas Engine look for a 460...OR get the V10 Tuned 1998-2010 E-Series 6.8L Tuner & Programmers Archives - 5 Star Tuning
Good Luck

Please provide even a modicum of evidence that the V10 would "grenade" in your situation.

I installed a 4.30 rear LSD and my V10 tows large trailers incredibly well. Not sure why Ford didn't offer this lower gearing option. The V10 really seems to spin well with this combo.

I haven't maxed it out -- but I towed a 10,000 LB RV trailer up and down 7% mountain grades without incident or overheating. It rocked.

Better than a 7.3? Hmmm. No. But if you're looking at value -- a V10/4.30 is a better value than a 7.3/3.73. IMHO.

Evidence ? I thought this was a Van Forum....Not a courtroom .....Is the Sky Falling ?
LittleRadio ....Ford didn't offer it because most people tow with Pick-ups...Or they get a Diesel...
Value is Relative.... what you value is not what someone else might.....The 4:30 ratio with the Limited Slip was an excellent choice for your Van however...Kudos.... Most PSD Vans come with the 3:55 from the Factory...I would love to have a 3:73... 90% of E350 Dually Vans have the 4:10....My 460 Dump has 4:56...Gearvendor units are a nice touch as well ...they solve a lot of issues ....but are not cheap...

You're right. Thanks for the correction. I actually had an E350 with a 7.3 L diesel but I never towed with it. It had a 3.55 rear but got bought back by Ford because of a paint defect.

Value is relative, true. Money is an issue with me and I don't row every day, so the V 10 with a 430 rear was a better choice over a diesel (which would've been very difficult to find anyway).

Keep the sunnyside up!

I've found a few cargos for around 10k withe 150k miles on them. I'll have 5 to 6 thousand dollars to put into it. The wife wants to make it look like a chase van then a free candy and wifi van.
Second row seats
Windows
Insulation and walls
Maybe tire wheel package want to run 33" think I'm tired of the 6" lift 35" set up.
Can do most of the work myself injectors, cups, glow plug, all the o rings. Minor stuff. Trans is a different beast.
Need to find just a platform first
But I think diesel would be the way to go.
